Antonia Orfield Obituary

Published by Star Tribune on May 16, 2009.
Orfield, Dr. Antonia Marie (Stoll) 67, of Somerville, Massachusetts, passed away on April 26th of breast cancer. Born in Minneapolis on December 14, 1941, daughter of Eva Swenson and Alfred Anthony Stoll, she graduated from Paige School and Washburn High School prior to heading east to attend Smith College. Her central interests were her three daughters and their families, and her career as a pioneer in behavioral optometry -- the prevention and treatment of a variety of vision problems and the enhancement of visual skills by nonsurgical, therapeutic methods. She was a former member of the faculty of the New England College of Optometry, and practiced at the Harvard University Health Service and privately in Cambridge. Earlier in her career Dr. Orfield operated a vision clinic at Mather Elementary School in Dorchester, Massachusetts documenting the improvement of children's grades and test scores with vision-related remedies to learning problems. Her findings were published in several articles and in her 2007 book, Eyes for Learning: Preventing and Curing Vision Related Learning Problems. She also coordinated a national conference on this issue at Harvard Graduate School of Education which led to a special issue of the Journal of Behavioral Optometry. Dr. Orfield received her masters in education from the University of Chicago and her doctor of optometry degree from Illinois College of Optometry. She began her career as a teacher but took 14 years for full-time mothering of her children, before deciding to train as an optometrist after experiencing a stunning cure of her severe myopia, through her own treatment by a behavioral optometrist. She was a fellow of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development and active participant in professional and civic organizations. She is survived by daughters, Amy Jacques, Sonia Orfield and Rosanna Cavanagh, their husbands Ralph Jacques, Adam Shah and Joseph Cavanagh, respectively; her grandchildren, Joseph Paul Cavanagh, Sylvie Anne Jacques, Luke Thomas Cavanagh, and Ava Antonia Orfield-Shah, and her brother, Stephen Stoll. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday, May 18 at 1:00 pm at St. Catherine of Genoa Church, 179 Summer Street, Somerville, Mass.

I was a patient of Dr. Orfield's almost 20 years ago when i was at Harvard law School- she literally changed my entire approach to health. She was amazing: kind, intelligent, thoughtful, someone who lived life to the fullest and shared it with others. I will never forget her. May she rest in peace.

I am very sorry to hear of Dr. Orfield's death. She was a really nice person. I had so much trouble with my vision and finding the right pair of glasses, I went to four optomotrists over a four year period after years of headaches from improper glasses. All of these OD's gave my prescriptions that just made things worse. When I finally went to Dr. Orfield she explained that everyone was overcorrecting me and gave me 3 pairs of glasses, reading, computer and distance. I've been free of eye strain and headaches ever since. She was a really nice lady and she helped me a lot.

I am very sorry for the loss of such a wonderful healer and helper. Dr. Orfield was one of the few doctors who understood and could help with my vision issues after several brain injuries. She was a delight-- warm, firm when you needed it (!) and very very kind. I hope her family can take comfort in knowing that she touched so many of us, and helped so often that her spirit lives on--- I tell my brain injured friends about her all the time! "Even though the sun sets, the day we had was good and strong" I will keep her memory close and clear and with much tenderness.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news. I was a patient of Dr. Orfield and benefited greatly from her innovative approach to dealing with vision problems. She was a true pioneer and changed many people's lives with her approach to myopia and other vision problems. She was also a kind and generous and inspiring person, and I always looked forward to my vision therapy classes with her. What i learned from her went beyond vision issues. Even after I left the county I continued to recommend her to people. My condolences to her family and friends.
