George Stiffler Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

STIFFLER, George George Joseph Stiffler, of Greensboro, GA, died April 20, 2010, of natural causes. He was 87. George is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Mildred, and their four children: George Stiffler of Arlington, Virginia, Therese Barnes of Atlanta, Georgia, Tim Stiffler of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Valerie Suessmith of McDonough, Georgia. He is survived also by six grandchildren: Whitney, Matthew, Charlie, Sam, Jack and Banning, all of whom will miss their "Pops" dearly. George was born February 22, 1923, in Belleville, New Jersey. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Rose, and his younger sister, Rose Stiffler. George graduated from Belleville High School and began a 34-year career with the Prudential Life Insurance Company in Newark, New Jersey. After the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving valiantly as an artillery forward observer with the 78th "Lightning" Division in Europe. George was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for his bravery during the assaults on the German Siegfried Wall and the Battle of the Bulge. He embodied the best of "The Greatest Generation," honoring both his family and country with his service. In 1952, George married Mildred Mahoney and settled in Nutley, New Jersey, as he continued his career with Prudential. The family moved to Bedford, Virginia, in 1974 to enjoy the slower pace of country life. Retired, George and Mildred moved to Greensboro, Georgia, in 1990 to be closer to their beloved grandchildren. A true gentleman, George was loving and generous, always putting others first. His greatest enjoyment came when he was surrounded by his family, and reveled in their accomplishments. Possessing a witty sense of humor, he reserved a special twinkle in his eye for those he adored. The finest husband, father, grandfather, and friend, George will remain an everlasting inspiration. His family will miss him tremendously. The viewing will be Thursday, April 22, from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. at McCommons Funeral Home with a prayer service starting at 6:00 P.M. A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, April 23, at 10:00 A.M., at Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church, 6341 Lake Oconee Parkway, Greensboro, Georgia 30642. Interment with military honors will be Monday, April 26, at 11:00 A.M. at the Georgia National Cemetery, 2025 Mount Carmel Church Lane, Canton, Georgia 30114. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, c/o Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
