Ellen Nettles Obituary

Ellen Elizabeth Nettles - DECATUR - Ellen Elizabeth Nettles (19), a Decatur native, drowned December 8th on St. Croix, VI. Ellen was pursuing her passion for sustainable agriculture through an internship at the Virgin Islands Sustainable Farm Institute. She had recently completed a summer/fall internship at Elderberry Pond organic farm in Auburn NY. Ellen's love for farming grew out of early experience gardening with her mother, Barbara Gaby Nettles, who died of cancer in April of 2009. Ellen attended Atlanta International School, St. Thomas Moore, and City of Decatur Schools before relocating to Savannah after her mother's death. Ellen completed her Junior year at Memorial Day School, and graduated from Jenkin's High with honors. Ellen lived her commitment to help people through volunteer activities, at Sunrise Retirement home, the Appalachian Service project through Decatur First United Methodist Church, youth activities at St Luke's Episcopal Church, and others. While living in Savannah, Ellen worked at Polk's Fresh Market and Tybee Island Social Club which focused her vision on sustainable food production as a life goal. She deferred college acceptance to gain real life experience in the field. A natural athlete, Ellen participated in cheerleading, softball, lacrosse, lifeguarding, and was also known for her artistic talents. She used her photographic eye and musical ear to produce magical creative works that continue to evoke joy. Those who met Ellen were captivated by her welcoming smile and deep brown eyes surround by luminescent blond hair. She held his holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet as a role model for living a life filled with compassion and service. She is survived by her father Jim and sister Eve, a research professor at Emory University and sculpture major at the University of Georgia respectively. She is the maternal grand-daughter of Martha Jean and the late Van R Gaby of Suwanee and paternal grand-daughter of the late James H. and Melba Porter Nettles of Savannah and his present widow, Beulah Harper Nettles. Extended family survivors include paternal aunts and uncles Diane and Jeff Meseroll, Pamela and Dale Karacostas, Deborah N. Hargroves, Susan and Ray Smith, Tom and Debbie Harper, maternal uncle Mark L. Gaby and wife Stacy as well as a host of cousins on both sides of the family. A celebration of her life will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Atlanta on Wed. Dec. 21 at 1:00. In lieu of flowers, remembrances and gifts may be made to: Ellen Nettles Memorial Fund, Fidelity Bank, 160 Clairemont Ave. Decatur, Georgia 30030. Attention: Ann Berg. Jim,

What a shock it was to read the notice in the Savannah Morning News. I am so very sorry for your tragic loss. She was a beautiful girl, and apparently overflowing with talent, personality, and spirituality. She must have blessed many lives while she was on this earth. I wish I had had the chance to get to know her.

I well remember your mom and dad from the Unity Church in Savannah. I thought the world of them, too. And I'll never forget your "gravity machine," which you were kind enough to show me one day. I have thought of you often, over the years, and wondered how your life turned out.

Blessings to you always.

She was a breath of fresh air, and her spirit lightened the day. I will always remember her enthusiasm to follow the way of the Dalai Lama. Her goodness will continue to work in the lives of those she touched.

I met Ellen last month, first at my son's wedding briefly, then on the farm, where Ellen and I did the dishes after lunch. I washed, she dried. We talked about her love for farming and she said she appreciated that I was washing. She was so sweet and endearing, and we giggled over "girl talk", as my daughter and daughter-in-law joined in the laughter, from the other side of the kitchen. She had already shown us her little personal plot and walked us through what she was doing in her garden. She'd even solicited my son and his wife to pull weeds, along the way. I remember she wore a t-shirt that said "Farm" on the front. She touched all in our group in a very warm, personal and positive way.

How shocked we were to receive my son's call telling the news. Nate and Shelli and the entire farm family on St.Croix feel such a great great loss, but I'm sure a joy, in having lived and worked with her, in such a shared appreciation and love for farming.

Please know our family is praying for peace for yours. We share in your grief at this time of such great sorrow at Ellen's passing. We will always remember her for her loving and kind spirit, and her obvious love of God's natural beauty. We will remember her as God's beautiful creation, also. We were so blessed to have known her, if only for such a short time.

God Bless You All, and May He Sustain You With His Love as Only He Can Do.

Lovingly,
Bobbi Matthews

Jim and Eve,

My heart goes out to you both at this difficult time. Both Barbara and Ellen had a talent for lighting up the lives of everyone who had the pleasure of meeting them. They are together now but that does little to assuage the heartbreak.

May God grant you his grace and loving presence as you manage, once again, to cope with this tragic and unimaginable loss. My heart and prayers are with you.
