Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Tomko Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

”Honor and Remember” - “Project Compassion” We love our Soldiers! We love our country and we cannot express enough love and compassion to the families of our fallen heroes. War does not discriminate – It breaks our hearts to see the faces of the fallen. We want to give this gift to the hero’s Mother, Father and/or spouse. We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization! Over 1,850 portraits have been completed and shipped to the parents and or spouse - at no cost as this is a gift from one American to another!
This is a gift! We have some wonderful sponsors who help with the costs, and only want you know that we care.
Contact us directly at [email protected] or go to www.heropaintings.com . If you have already had a portrait completed, we pray that you are enjoying the portrait and God Bless You.
Sincerely and Respectfully,

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Nicholas, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Jack, There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about Nick. I remember me, my dad and my brother always coming to your house to watch the Steeler game. After the game me and Nick and Jesse would ride our bikes around Meridian and play basketball behind your house. I wanted to let you know how proud I am that my cousin was such a brave hero! He is greatly missed and will never be forgotten.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Jack and Family,
It has been over two years since Nick gave his life for our great country. Not a day goes by that I don't think of him, and all that he contributed in his short life. A loving father, a compassionate son, and a true friend to all those fortunate enough to have known him. I keep a picture of him from Bosnia being chased by the Police Dogs on my desk...it still puts a smile on my face. SGT Nick Tomko will not be forgotten.

I had the honor of being Nicks Brigade Command Sergeant Major in Camp Dogwood, Iraq. I remember going out with him on a few 4 in the morning IED patrols with nothing more than a large spotlight, a few Humvees and a lot of guts. On one particular patrol I was actually his back seat gunner and I remember how uncomfortable he was that I was in the backseat and not him, (the ranking person normally sits up front to operate the radios...) but it was his patrol and I insisted. Once he figured out that he was in charge he performed superbly, controlling the convoy speed, direction and scanning for targets or IEDs. He and his guys saved a lot of soldiers lives by finding explosives along our convoy route to Baghdad by doing those midnight to 4 patrols and I still thank him for that. I was in the HQs and heard the firefight over the radio the night he was killed, and they really gave the enemy everything they had that night. I went directly to the hospital when we got word that the patrol had taken casualties and was with him after he was hit. The doctors there did everything they could to save his life but it was just his time. I had the task of going outside and informing his team that he didnt make it, and we all cried together out there in the darkness. I also had the honor of Playing the Bagpipes at the Memorial Service in his honor in Iraq. I remember that it was very hard to play, as I was crying along with all the rest of the soldiers. I have recently made arraingments to display those Bagpipes at the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor in Newburg NY in honor of both our Purple Hearts.

Dear Tomko's: I know that we are somehow related and I have been tracking the story of Nicholas. I send my most heartfelt condolences on your loss, but also to the loss of our nation. I was in the initial attack into Afghanistan and Kandahar and I know full well what Nicholas had to endure. Please be proud of him, his warrior spirit, and the great legacy of the Tomko name. Nicholas's name truly struck a chord with me, and I just named my newborn son Nikolas. So, please know that I will rear my boy to be proud and patriotic like your own Nicholas. And if you ever need any assistance from me--please do not hesitate to call. We are family! I leave you with the words of Stonewall Jackson: "God has fixed the time for my death. I do not concern myself about that, but to be always ready, no matter when it may overtake me. That is the way all men should live, and then all would be equally brave." I am certain that Nicholas was both brave and ready, and I will do my utmost to honor his name in the future with my service.

While Watching TV back in December I saw a man who was selling Braclets with the name of those soliders who died in Iraq with part of the proceeds going to the soliders families. I purchased a braclet and it had the name of Sgt. Nicholas Tomko Printed on it. I wanted to let you his family know that I will be wearing this braclet with honor and humility. I have also made it a point to find out all I can about Nick, so that when people see the braclet and ask me about it I can tell them about the man behind the name. If I had one wish it would be that good men would not have to die in defense of freedom. But since we live in a world full of evil I thank God for men like Nick that are willing to sacrifice their lives so that others can live in a free and democratic society. May God bless and comfort you in your grief.

You have my sincerest sympathy. Nick was one of my students here at Hampton High School (math). I remember him as being quiet, but strong. Always a sheepish smile...always respectful. It would be great to have a class filled with the same character as Nick's. Now, it is my turn to show that same respect for Nick. As an ex Army reservist myself, I know Nick was surrounded by other soldiers that had a bond that was hard to imagine. One article mentioned that Nick "...touched people in the military and civilians, whether local nationals in Bosnia or here in Iraq..." and here at Hampton High School also...
Is there a fund for Nick's son? If so, could you let us know here at Hampton High.
Be strong and hang on to those memories.

My deepest sympathies go out to the family of Nick Tomko. My brother, Kevin Luffy, is in Nick's unit and I know they were close as they spent time in Bosnia together. Please know that our family is praying for Nick and his loved ones.
