Dear Pam and Family,
Gene is a man whom made the earth a better place for us all. He is a brother to me, a man who made me smile, slow down, appreciate the small things around me. He brought a feeling of contentment and peace which he shared unconditionally with me. From my days of hanging out at the Group houses I was thought as a little brother by him. He called me T-Bird or plain Bird for short. It has been written how he helped so many with their home purchase, but what he brought was piece of mind, a calm which helped us all through a tough time. He cut through all of the walls, he showed us all a better path to take. Yes he is missed but we all have some of Gene in us now that will help us along our path in life. I thank God I was given the gift of Gene Basset, Geno, Dude, Buddy, names that were associated with Gene. You and Gene are a gift, thank you for sharing with us all. I'm happy in my mind knowing Gene is walking next to me as I walk my path. I'm Blessed!
With all my Love.
Stevo...AKA T-Bird

Gene was a special guy! I have fond memories of Gene and I in high school. He was loads of fun, and a good friend to all. I know he was a dedicated husband and father. Blessings to your family.

So sorry to hear of Gene's passing. I remember Gene from the old neighborhood from the early '60's. He lived on Cedar Ave., with a great view of Lake Nokomis. We were just a half block away on 18th. My earliest rememberance of Gene was how dedicated he was to his sister, and the time he put in with Courage Center. When most young guy's were thinking of goofing off over summer vacation, Gene was stepping up and helping his Mother out, and showing true love for his sister with her summer camp. Very Cool.
I will also recall how even tempered Gene always was. A true Gentleman, who will be missed by many.
Rest Well Gene.

It was indeed with a heavy heart that I read about Gene the Machine's passing in a note for a friend. Gene (Bill Thomas) and I (and a bunch of other guys) shared a big old house off campus at the “U” in 1969-70 – a year for all time!
Gene was so much fun – a “Liver of Life” – who taught all of my engineering friends and I that there was way more to living than just studying. Gene was always up for an adventure and led us on many great and fun times. From his foray into photography and riding around in my Fiat (in February) with the top down so he could get just the right shot – to attending his play on the Coffman Union Lawn in May – just a few among so many great memories.
I regret having lost touch with Gene over the years after college as our paths moved apart but know, Pam and family, that he was always in my thoughts, especially when I felt down, and that I now know that he is tripping out a whole group of brand new friends.
Gene will be missed …

Oh my lord, please treat this one extra special! Pam, Geno, Shawn and all the family, my thoughts and prayers are with you now. Gene will be missed by all who knew him. I had the good fortune of learning the real estate business by this wonderful teacher, mentor and friend for 7 years back in the 70's and 80's. He always said to me, now that you have one deal under your belt, go out and get 3 more before you take a day off. That profound statement along with all the other thing's I learned from Gene, led to my long and successful real estate career. Thank you Gene!

I was so sorry to hear about Gene. We first met at the U of M. My friends and I had rented a large off-campus house and needed more roommates. Gene answered our ad and showed up in his engineer boots and a car that he couldn't turn off because the starter was broken. We were immediately impressed and invited him to join us. Gene quickly fit in with our quirky group and we became good friends. The following summer we went over to Europe together. Gene bought a motorcycle and split with us after a few days to meet up with Pam. I have so many great Gene stories from those times. I am sure he is looking down and laughing with me as I think about them. He was a great guy, great friend and a great family man. I will never forget him. My deepest sympathies to Pam and his family.

I was so sorry to hear about Gene. We first met at the U of M when Gene answered an ad we placed for roommates to fill up a large house we rented. Gene showed up in his engineer boots and a car which he couldn't turn off because there was a problem with the starter. Of course we were immediately impressed and invited Gene to move in. We quickly became great friends as Gene fit in perfectly with our quirky off campus student family. The following summer we went over to Europe together where Gene bought a bike and split off after a couple of weeks to meet Pam. I have so many great stories to tell about Gene from those times. Gene....you were a great guy, great friend, and a great family man. I am sure you are looking down and laughing along with me as I remember some of our good times. My deepest sympathies to Pam and the family.

Prayers for the entire, extended Bassett family from another Ramsey and Washburn classmate. Having been away from MN for 30 years now, I did not stay in touch, but clearly remember Gene's kindness, sensitivity and smarts in the classroom. Please extend my sympathy to all.

Geno this is another very sad day in our short lives. We will miss your great smurky smile and your off the wall humor.
It was was alway a great time when Geno showed up to family get togethers.
His line was hey I always wanted to be a LaBahn !! Gene we always thought of you as our brother. you were around when were growing up when we got married when we had parties and when we bought our Homes. Your Guidance and friendship help us find exactly what we were looking for and we all had fun hanging out. It wasnt the thought of looking at houses it was the fun of it and the Beers and dinners and laughs after a long night looking at homes.
I dont think there is a LaBahn that you did not help with finding our perfect places to live.
You always cared about each of us and what was going on with our lives.
Our Brother Gary and you were the best of friends and it was cool to see you both interact and laugh so much and the stories made us all laugh out loud. We will miss you so much that you wont be around to check up on us.
You are up there now with a great group of Guys. Gary and Ed and JP
Must be showing you the time of your life. I will think of you often in the years to come and say to myself "I bet Geno would of liked this". You were a great Friend and Brother to us all and we thank God that you were a part of our lives.
Keep smilin Geno and keep looking for that great place in heaven that we would all like to some day move to.
Love you Bud
You will Be sadly missed

One summer day at Porky's Gene asked Patty Burke and me to drive for him, to give his siser a ride to Camp Courage. He had taken some sinus medication and didn't want to drive. Patty and I learned about love and humanity that day. Watching Gene with his sister and the other campers is one of my cherished memories. Thanks Gene.

Such a sad loss! Gene & I graduated from Washburn together and more recently, he was invaluable in handling three real estate transactions while I was dealing with elderly parents. A total professional and a caring friend who helped me though difficult times.

Gene was always a competitor in everything he set his mind on. He enjoyed playing tennis in the summertime when we could find an open Bloomington court. He spoke kindly of his family all the time. I am very sad to see him leave us....looking forward to reuniting in Glory.

Gene became friends with "everyone" at Ramsey Jr. High and then Washburn High School as soon as he moved to Mpls. in the early 1960's. He had a charming and strong personality and was very bright. As a classmate and longterm Bloomington resident, I was happy to see his success in business and his personal life. Special guy. I am so sorry for your loss.

I'll always remember Gene for his sweet personality and the way he really cared about people. He's a long-time family friend but he was a mentor to me in the last few years. He made me want to be a better person (and agent) and taught me so much about really taking care of people and doing it ethically. I am so grateful for having him in my life and I will miss him dearly but everything he taught me, whether spoken or not, will stay with me forever. Rest in peace....

Gene will be remembered as a bright spot in the lives of others! Dedicated, enthusiastic, interested in everyone's story; professional, caring...and through it all, charming. Gene will be missed! Love and warmest thoughts to Pam, Geno, Shawn and family, and to Judey Hansing and family.
