Jon Fettig Obituary
Visitation will be will be held from noon to 9 p.m. MDT today at the North Dakota Army National Guard Armory, 46 Museum Drive, Dickinson, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. MDT. Visitation will continue from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. MDT Wednesday at the North Dakota Army National Guard Armory.
Jon Paul Fettig was born Jan. 3, 1973, in Dickinson. He attended Heart River Elementary in Dickinson, and graduated from Manzano High School in Albuquerque, N.M. Jon entered the National Guard in 1991, and served in Albuquerque and Dickinson. Jon married Cody Ladwig on July 30, 1999. He worked for Bis-Man Security, Wal-Mart, McDonald's, Happy Joe's and Verizon Wireless.
Jon was obtaining a degree as computer programming specialist. He was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 1137, and the Theodore Roosevelt Amateur Radio Club. He was an avid reader and loved video games and hunting.
Jon was a gentle man of many colors. He touched the lives of everyone he came in contact with. He always had the famous smile on his face, and a hand stretched out to anyone who needed help. Jon most enjoyed his time with his wife, Cody, his family and his cat, Tiger.
Jon is survived by his wife, Cody; his parents, Shirley and Larry Fettig; his brother, Craig Fettig; his sister, Tenille Fettig; his mother-in-law and stepfather-in-law, Cheri and Robert Wiegand; his father-in-law, Jim Ladwig; his grandmothers, Theresa Knaup, Marie Fettig and Yvonne Fettig; his brothers-in-law, Cory (Lisa) Ladwig and Donny Ladwig; his nephews, Austin Wollschlager, and Stephen, Arthur and Joshua Ladwig; his niece, Kristina Ladwig; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, August Fettig and Lawrence Knaup; his uncle, LaVern Fettig; and several other relatives.
In lieu of flowers the family strongly suggests a memorial in Jon's name be given.

To the Fettig family. I was there in Iraq, 130th Engineer Brigade when Jon was KIA and there when he was put on the aircraft heading home.
Though I did not know Jon personally, it is my honor to say I served with Jon during my Iraq tour of duty. I will always remember Jon and his ultimate sacrifice. He is and always will be a hero!
July 22nd is fast approaching. God bless you for your son and his selfless service.

We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Fettig Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to troops in Afghanistan this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Jon P. Fettig US Army Specialist. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.
The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. I can't imagine what you are going through. I have known several people to go to war in Iraq, but fortunately, they all came back. My heart, thoughts, and prayers go with you! It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Spc Fettig. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that Spc Fettig knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience, and for that we can never say thank you enough.

To the family of Spc. Jon P. Fettig:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 25 May, 2008. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “The Price of Freedom” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.
As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Sat. 24 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sun. 25 May, a “PrayerVigil for Peace” will be held. You are invited to stop by and light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one’s cross in the Memorial Garden, then enter the Chapel for prayer.

My heartfelt sympathy to the Fettig family in the loss of Jon. I did not know Jon, but my heart is broken and I am saddened for your loss of such a fine young person and hero. May God bring you peace in your heart as you reflect on all the wonderful memories you hold so close. Please know that you are in my heart and prayers. My heart was touched by the many wonderful/beautiful things written about you. it has been over 4 years since you were taken. Please know that Jon you are my hero and you will NEVER be forgotten.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

On Friday, March 23rd, at 4:30 pm Mountain Time, Sacred Heart Church will have an "Iraq-American Way of the Cross" to memorialize 14 of the fallen, one for each of the stations. Jon Fettig will be memorialized on the First Station, "Jesus Is Condemned to Death." We thought that the family would like to know. All blessings to you during this holy season.

I was at Ramadi when Jon Fettig's remains were brought into Rifles Base. Knowing I was on the verge of invading his privacy, I spent a few moments with him in silent prayer for his family imagining there sense of loss to come. My son and I were both in Iraq at the same time during this period as well. On Feb 18th, 2007 my son died in Afghanistan. I now completely understand and continue to pray for the Fettigs
