Joyce THALL Obituary

THALL, Joyce Joyce Thall, passed away on August 21, 2020. Joyce was born to Nancy and Daniel Boone Barnett on November 24, 1934, in Menifee County, Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Thall, who died in 1981; three sisters, Alberta Riffel, Juanita Pucket, Dixie Valentine and her grandson, Sterling Johnson. Joyce graduated from Hamilton High School in 1952. She also attended classes at the University of Cincinnati and Miami University. She worked for several law offices, and in 1981 was appointed as the Butler County Recorder by the County Republican Party. Thereafter, she was successful for reelection five times. Joyce was named as a Woman of Achievement by the YWCA in 1991. She was also acclaimed as Outstanding Lay Person by the YWCA in 1992. In March of 2000, she was presented an award of gratitude by the Butler County Township Association. In 2003 the Board of Trustees of the Butler County Historical Society recognized her as a Bicentennial Historian. In 2005 the O'Tucks recognized Joyce as an outstanding Kentuckian and also made her a Kentucky Colonel. Joyce spent untold hours working for the O'Tucks to secure scholarship funds for needy students to attend Miami University Hamilton. Joyce had a passion for this project and she worked diligently to raise money for these scholarships. In 2008 she was named Republican of the Year by the Butler County Republican Party. Joyce is survived by her daughter, Tracy Thall Johnson (Christopher); her one granddaughter, Ashli, and numerous nieces and nephews. She loved everyone in Butler County AND BELIEVED IT IS THE BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD TO LIVE. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to O'Tucks in care of Richard Hyde, 332 High Street, Hamilton Ohio 45011. Online condolences are available at www.weigelfuneralhome.com

Joyce was a lovely person who supported all of our community service projects with Altrusa International of Hamilton, OH Inc. She participated as much as possible. She faithfully served as one of our judges for 9 of our 10 Adult Team Spelling Bees to raise money for literacy projects in Butler County. We happily raised $36,250 for literacy grants over the first 10 Spelling Bee events.

I remember one Bee a couple years ago when she won a door prize that was a hand-painted picture of a blue bird. Joyce was so excited because she collected lots of things about birds over the years and had them displayed prominently in her home. The artist, Nancy Sullivan from Loveland, OH, was actually a guest at that very same event, so we captured a photo of Joyce with the artist. It was indeed a serendipitous occasion!

Altrusa of Hamilton will dearly miss Joyce's caring and support for our community and service projects. Rest in peace, dear friend.

Sincerely yours,

Mary E Kuenzig

Joyce was a dedicated member of Altrusa International of Hamilton, OH, Inc. for over 37 years, from 1983 to today. She was awarded Emeritus Membership status a few years ago. If there was going to be a funeral or visitation for Joyce, our custom is to present the member with a rose and this memorial prayer:

"With this token of friendship, we send you into the arms of all your Sister Altrusans who have passed on before you. We know they will welcome you into Heaven with warm and open arms. Together, we know you will be watching over us as we continue to serve others here on Earth. Your Altrusa spirit will live on through us until we meet again. May you go in peace."

Most sincerely remembered by all,

Altrusa International of Hamilton, OH Inc.

I have known Joyce since the 1960s. Joyce was a wonderful person
and never knew a stranger. Joyce was also very attentive to the
poor and disadvantaged.

Rest in Peace, Joyce. Sleep with the Angels.

I knew Joyce for many years and her sister Alberta Riffel. Joyce always had time for you even if it was a wave when she was driving her car! We both had the same cars, Buick Park Avenues. And believe me she was hard to keep up even when driving her car! She's going to be missed terribly not only by her family, but her many, many friends! There isn't enough space for her many, many accomplishments, but she will be remembered always! God bless.
