Mrs. Wood was my 5th grade teacher at HV Bear, what a year it was! That was the year of the Teacher Strike, my sweet 4th grade teacher took me over and introduced me to Mrs.Wood on the picket line. For a “mean” teacher she was really nice. During that same year we moved from that area across the river and I had to leave my beloved teachers and school and start at Mound after Spring break, I was so upset, I told Mrs. Wood my new address she was so sure I would love it and be fine, I ask her how she knew?? Turns out, I moved into her neighborhood and she was right ! I loved her so much along with Mr. Wood, he would buy me candy sticks when I made it to Wantz. The Wood Family was a true blessing in Miamisburg schools.

Mrs. Wood was my 3rd grade teacher and made a memorable impression on me. I was fortunate enough to see her several times over the years as an adult and I respected her even more. My condolences to her family and friends. She was a special lady to so many.

I have missed her so much since she moved away. She was a teacher and friend that I respected very much!. She was an intricate part of the Bear School reunion at the Msbg. Mound Park in 2010. She was a honored member of the Bear School Ladies Luncheon that was once a month for quite awhile. I will remember her fondly and miss her forever.

I have always credited her with one of my most influential childhood moments. It was one of those moments that I look back on and realize how much it influenced who I became as an adult. In February 1987 she held up a National Geographic of the Appalachian Trail and told the class about how she was going to hike the trail with Dave when they retired. This is the moment that planted a seed for a dream I fulfilled 10 years later when I hiked from Georgia to Maine in 1997. I was happy to send her postcards from the trail and show her a slideshow of my 5 month hike when I got home. I went on to hike other long trails and introduce others to backpacking professionally including an annual AT Trip Planning class where I always love telling the story of how my dream began. We will be forever linked because of that seed she planted in me as an 11 year old. I have even been back to Bear School to share stories of my hike with my daughter's class ironically in the same room where it all began. The cycle continues. Thank you Mrs. Wood.
