1942 - 2021
Richard J. Stromberg, son of Jaye Stromberg and Ann Nass Stromberg, passed away in Westchester, N.Y., on March 17, 2021 at the age of 78. Born and raised in Queens, N.Y., he was known for his endless optimism and strength through adversity, even in recent years while coping with increasing health challenges. Richard worked every day until his passing. His business, the manufacturing of umbrellas, was one of his passions. As a young man, he took over management of Raindeer Umbrellas, founded by his father in 1942, with a factory in New York City. Richard later traveled through Europe and Asia, becoming an expert in styling and production, which served his vision to expand the business into the Promotional Products Industry. He grew the company -- now called StrombergBrand Umbrellas -- together with his wife, Helen, to become the successful, award-winning one it is today.
Richard is survived by his wife; his daughters, Deborah, Marla and her husband Michiel, Jan and Jennifer; his grandchildren, Olivia, Aaron, Adam, Jonah, and Tara; and countless friends. He loved reading, art, jazz music, billiards, nature, gardening and landscaping at his country home, astronomy, etymology, traveling to warm places, and murder mysteries. He will be greatly missed. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in his memory.

This really goes back a very long way. When I was in high school, and for a few years while I was in college, my family had a summer place on Tennessee Avenue in Long Beach, NY as did Richard's family. I remember the Stromberg's had a corner home...closer to the beach. As I recall, Richard did not "hang around" the beach as much as the rest of us did. He was probably busy working for his dad. I think I remember a Corvette. But what I definitely remember was Richard's ebullient personality....he was so well liked by everyone.

I will always remember when Richard borrowed my sailboat to go sailing on the bay. Sometime later Helen said “he’s been gone for quite a while, maybe we should go out and check on him.” We arrived to find that the sailboat had capsized and Richard was clinging to the capsized hull. I anchored the boat and dove in to save him. When I finally got there and ended up clinging to the same boat all we could do was laugh at the whole scenario. He looked at me and said “ok, now who is going to save both of us?

Richard was genuinely one of the kindest people I had the pleasure of knowing in this industry. He would do anything to mentor or help both distributors and suppliers. Our industry has lost a wonderful person. May your memories be your treasure.
