Elliott Levitas Obituary

When Elliott Levitas became Georgia's first Jewish congressman in 1975, he was already known for being a public servant who had stood up against racism in the formerly segregated state. And he continued his call to aiding others years afterward, helping to lead a landmark class-action lawsuit on behalf of American Indians against the U.S. government.

The legal and political crusader against injustice died Friday, Dec. 16, just 10 days before his 92nd birthday.

Levitas would serve five terms in the Legislature and became a leading proponent for the development of Atlanta's rapid transit system, MARTA.

In 1974, he was elected to represent Georgia's Fourth Congressional District. Levitas headed the subcommittee investigating the Reagan administration's efforts to undermine the mission of the Environmental Protection Agency, which led to the firing of dozens of senior officials.

His environmental efforts as a legislator and U.S. representative also were reflected in his work to create and fund the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area as a national park. Many years later in 2011, the U.S. National Park Service honored Levitas at a ceremony at the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.

The funeral service will be held at noon Monday at the Ahavath Achim Synagogue in Atlanta, with burial at Arlington Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to ADL Southeast, Georgia Conservancy, Southern Environmental Law Center, Ahavath Achim Synagogue or choice of charity. Dressler's Jewish Funeral Care is in charge of arrangements.

My father, Sidney J. Marcus was friends with Elliot and Barbara Levitas. I came to know Karin Levitas at The Paidea School in the early1970's. They were special times. I was at their home and Marines Friend in our teen years. I only recently became aware of his death. My sincere condolences to the immediate family, extended family, and mourn this loss, along with the entire Atlanta Jewish community. Respectfully, Robyn Marcus

I am forever grateful to Elliott as a mentor to me as a young environmental lawyer at Kilpatrick & Cody and then as the director of SELC's Georgia and Alabama office. One of my fondest memories of Elliott is the day he took me to lunch at the House of Representatives cafeteria. Elliott knew the name of every single cafeteria worker there and greeted each of them. I learned a lot about Elliott that day and his depth of character and caring for every person who crossed his path. I am sending loving thoughts to Elliott's family, especially his beautiful wife Barbara, who hosted me in their lovely home many times. I will deeply miss Elliott, and the world will miss Elliott. I am so grateful to have known him and learned from him. Ciannat Howett

Elliott was a dear family friend who helped my single mother, Betty, on several occasions. He gave me a Thesaurus for my high school graduation gift as encouragement to learn. I have used it often and it still sits on my bookshelf. My mother could tell many wonderful stories about how selfless and serving this fine man was. The best people are servants at heart and his heart was so beautiful. We will miss him dearly.
Sincerely, Roger Swims

My late mother, Mrs. Goodrich to you, knew Eliot Levitas. He fought to make PL-94-142 a serious reality for special education kids..
