Jack Alpert Obituary

Dr. Jack Nathaniel Alpert
07/20/1938 - 10/03/2023
Dr. Jack Nathaniel Alpert, aged 85, died on Tuesday, October 3, 2023 after a long struggle with cancer. Born on July 20, 1938 in Newark, New Jersey, to Ruby (Margulis) and Louis Alpert, Jack attended Johns Hopkins University and later Tufts Medical School where he discovered his passion for neurology. After completing his service in the Air Force, Jack moved to Houston in 1971 where he began working in private practice. He served as Chief of Neurology at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital for 22 years and throughout his career, he taught medical students and residents at the University of Texas and Baylor College of Medicine. For six years he was Chairman of the St. Luke's Ethics Committee where he led a group of physicians, clergy, and ethicists to review complex life and death cases. While he authored some 24 journal articles, his proudest accomplishment was the writing and subsequent publication of his textbook "The Neurologic Diagnosis: A Practical Approach." He also spent his later years writing about his life and travels. His final book was a collection of quotes and aphorisms that he had been collecting for decades.
Devoted to family, he is survived by Ruth, his wife of 56 years, son Richard Alpert (Kelly) and daughters Ariela and Jessica Alpert Silber (Jacob) as well as his five grandchildren Maya, Emi, and Wyatt Alpert and Theo and Nicola Silber. He had a very close relationship with his nephews and nieces, Michael Frishkopf (Iman Mersal), John Frishkopf (Brett Mattingly), Sophie Frishkopf (Phil Pitha) and Bianca Medina (Ned Gold). He is predeceased by his parents, Ruby and Louis Alpert, his sister Barbara Frishkopf, and his son Daniel Alpert.

You were the best ever neurologist. You diagnosed a tricky seizure disorder giving me my life back. When my RA became terribly painful you treated me with narcotics in a manor that did not cause physical addiction. When I was better I went weeks without narcotics. But when I was terrible you helped me through it. Thank you for trusting me with 90 day quantities so I could go overseas with my husband while he worked. After my dr visits we discussed our travels. I think you were amazing. Your family should be very proud of you. You all have my deepest condolences. Please feel free to converse. [email protected] mkfurgeson rph

As a patient I felt privileged to have him as a Dr. never meet a more caring person.

I was just looking up Dr. Alpert´s phone number to call for a referral and discovered this sad news way too late.

I am a longtime patient and can´t imagine the medical world without his presence. He was the kindest and best doctor I´ve ever met. Not to mention how brilliant. Always active and vibrant. That mountain climbing!

I´m so sorry for the family.

This is a terrible loss for the medical and healing community.
There aren´t any physicians left like him. The very best gone. I´m sad to hear this so late. What will I do without his advice?

Jack was a kind man and clever physician. Such a loss for Ruth and his family and large menagerie of friends.

May his memory be eternal and bring blessings and fond memories.

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Alpert's passing. He was such a joy to work with and for and I am proud to have been his transcriptionist for many years and to have participated in helping him with his books and published articles. He was a gifted and caring physician. The times I was a guest in his and Ruth's home were so enjoyable. My heart goes out to Ruth and his family, such loving, amazing and talented people. I am truly blessed to have known Dr. Albert and his wonderful family. I pray God's blessings on them all.

It was with sadness that I read Dr. Alpert´s obituary. He saved my life when he attended my bad case of Guillain Barre´ Syndrome in 1975. Will always be indebted to him. My condolences to his family and loved ones.
