Thomas Mann Obituary

Mann, Thomas O. "Coach"

Thomas O. "Coach" Mann, also affectionately known as "Falcon, Tin Cup, Mangy, and Fly Face," completed his life's journey on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at the age of 86. Born in Springfield, Ohio, he was the son of the late Louis Mann and Elnore Durbin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Durbin, and his sister Marjorie Oyer. Tom found his lifelong love in Sue (Schneider) Mann, and their enduring bond of 60 years was sealed on February 2, 1963.

Tom was a proud graduate of Catholic Central High School, class of 1955, and he served his country in the United States Army. He dedicated a significant part of his working life to Speco-Kelsey Hayes. However, it was in the realm of coaching that Tom found his true passion. He coached football, track, and cross country for St. Teresa, Northridge Bearcats, Hayward, and Springfield North. To those who knew him, he was more than just a coach; he was a motivator, overflowing with energy, enthusiasm, and an unforgettable spirit. As Sandy, one of his track athletes, aptly put it, "He was quite a motivator!"

Coach Mann's impact extended far beyond the playing fields. He cherished time spent with family, enjoyed a round of golf, and relished in card games with his friends. Tom was a character in the truest sense. Kroger need not worry about him meticulously inspecting strawberries or conducting taste tests on fruits anymore. Springfield's roads may be a bit safer without Tom's spirited presence behind the wheel. He was a man who embraced life to the fullest.

Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Sue, and their daughters: Terri Mann and Tonya (Kyle) Bennett. He took immense pride in his grandchildren: Vanessa (Jason) Berg, Thomas Bennett, Valarie Vess, and Baylee Bennett (Levi Wiskirchen).

A memorial gathering to honor Coach Mann's life will take place on Saturday, December 9th, from 4:00 – 6:00 pm at the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME, with a military honor ceremony concluding the event at 6:00 p.m. Friends and loved ones are invited to join the family at The Landing at Littleton & Rue for a reception and a chance to share stories, just the way Tom would have wanted it.

In the memory of Coach Tom Mann, let us remember the boundless enthusiasm and love for life that he shared with all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to either the Clark County Dog Shelter or the SPCA. To view his memorial video or leave condolences, please visit www.littletonandrue.com.

Sorry I missed the viewing. Tommy was a special guy and a great guy to have on my staff at North, but some of my fondest memories are away from the field. Every now and then he'd showed up at lunch in the teacher's lounge with his "bag" of money he won at work. And he seemed to win a lot. Also, he'd talk about going home and "relaxing" in the bean bag (although he had some other phrases not for here). Tom even made trips down to Kettering just to talk and catch up. Words do not do justice to the MAN, the FALCON, TOMMY MANN.

Coach Mann was a class act. No nonsense. Genuinely cared about all of the students. Supported us. He will always be a positive part of my high school experience. May God continue to bless his family and friends. Sachiko Burns

He touched so many lives! He treated everyone fairly, he pulled talent and the best out of everyone he knew! He was gifted with that skill! He still bragged about this girls and just loved us! He loved his football players but loved the toughness of the girls! He loves his family and loved to laugh.
He has made such a difference in so many lives. His absence with be missed. So thankful to have a few conversations with him over the past couple months! He was so incredibly proud of the strong women he had a hand in coaching! He once told me.... "You know I´ve coached women who are doctors, lawyers, teachers and detectives...my girls make a difference!" Then he smiled and told my co-workers that I was one of his runners! We were an extention of his family! He was a great and giving man!
We are all so fortunate to have him in our lives as long as he was here! See ya when I see ya and I love ya Coach.
