Charles "Chuck" Surat

Norwich, VT - Charles "Chuck" Francis Surat of Norwich, Vermont, passed into eternity on December 30, 2023. A humble, faith-filled man of integrity, true grit, and few words, he was an involved community member of Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Norwich.

Chuck was born in Staten Island, New York on September 16, 1954 to Marion T. "Chuck" Surat and Carmen Romero Surat. He grew up in New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. In 1972, he graduated from McQuaid Jesuit High School (Rochester, NY). Over the years, he acquired three college degrees: a B.A. in Biology (1977) and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering (1987) from Merrimack College (MA), and finally, an RN. After undergraduate school, he followed his heart to Vermont. In his first career, Chuck worked as an Electrical Engineer at Fairbanks Scales in St. Johnsbury, VT. Later, as a registered nurse, he specialized in geriatric nursing. In addition, he volunteered at the Good Neighbor Health Clinic, served as a firefighter with the Peacham Volunteer Fire Department, and assisted with the Barnet EMT. Chuck loved the outdoors. He hiked, fished, swam at Harvey's Lake, and was a trailblazer for family and friends alike. Nurturing his children and bringing others close to nature were among his greatest joys. He was predeceased by his father, Marion T. "Chuck" Surat, Sr., and his dear friend, Kirsten. He is survived by his mother, Carmen Surat of Roanoke, VA; three children: Sean Surat (wife Jennifer) of Peacham, Ian Surat-Mosher and Noelle Surat-Mosher of Norwich; two beloved grandchildren, Connor and Chloe Surat; seven siblings and their families. The family offers special thanks to the medical staff at DHMC and heartfelt gratitude to Penny Roberts and Kathy Watson. A celebration of Chuck's life will take place at a later date.
