F. Gleason Obituary
Heath, MA - F. Walter Gleason, 88, passed away on Sunday (3/10/2024) at home. Born on July 23, 1935 in North Adams, he was the son of Frank Isaac Gleason and Edith (Marshall) Gleason. Living most of his life in Heath, he was a 1953 graduate of Arms Academy and a member of the Heath Union Church. Walter was a member of the Heath Volunteer Fire Department and held numerous town offices. He was employed as a groundskeeper by Deerfield Academy, drove bus and ran his dairy farm for close to 50 years.
Survivors include two sons Daniel R. (Rachel) Gleason of Hinsdale, NH and Glenn G. Gleason of Heath and two grandsons: Greggory and Samuel Gleason, both of NH. He was predeceased by his wife Beverly (Beck) Gleason in 2017.
Funeral services will be held on Friday (3/15/2024) at 11:00 AM at the Heath Union Church, with burial delayed until spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heath Volunteer Fire Department. Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home of Shelburne Falls.

We landed in Heath in 1970 and Walt was our closest neighbor. We had little in the way of money and tools, or know-how, but a VW Microbus full of enthusiasm. Walt and Sue supplied us with fresh milk at a dollar a gallon and a wealth of free advice. He knew every one of his sixty cows by name. In March we staggered through three feet of snow, gathering and emptying sap buckets. In May he plowed part of his pasture so we could have a garden, the produce to be split with his family. (Our carrots won a ribbon at the Heath Fair). Seeing him again at the fair recently was the highlight of our visit. He will always have a place in our hearts.

Walter was the very first person we met when we purchased our property adjacent to his in 2016. He quickly became a good friend, stopping by frequently to check on our progress with the renovation of our house. He and my husband Stanley would share stories of farm and country life for hours. We loved Walter and will miss him.
