Stephen Kolasinski Obituary

Stephen Michael Kolasinski, born on May 23, 1956, passed away on April 21, 2024, after a long illness. Mike was surrounded by a circle of friends who were his steadfast support team through his health struggles. His parents, Alvin and Margaret Kolasinski, preceded him in death. He leaves behind his brother Rick, sister-in-law Cindy, his nieces, and his beloved dog Lucy.

After graduation from what was then known as Memphis State University, Mike worked as a runner in the press room at the Commercial Appeal. It was there that he learned the art of editing, from both a writing and a fact checking perspective, as he ran drafts back and forth between reporters and editors.

During Mike's more than three decades at FedEx (Federal Express), he led Communications during a variety of events and changes, from acquisitions to major events like 9/11 and more. It was a high honor to receive a draft communication back from him that had not been heavily edited or re-written--an honor experienced rarely by very few. He always insisted on viewing every communication from the perspective of a front-line team member. Having started his FedEx career working nights at the Memphis Hub, he never forgot that the people who actually move the packages are the ones that made ""absolutely positively"" happen.

Mike did a very convincing job of disguising his enormous compassion and caring for people under a sometimes-gruff exterior. But his personal loyalty and dedication to his large circle of friends was remarkable. Once Mike decided someone was a friend, they could not escape from his concern. The medical professionals looking after him in his final months frequently commented on how impressed they were to see a patient with such a large circle of friends who obviously cared deeply for him.

Even while working long hours throughout his career, Mike still managed to maintain an encyclopedic knowledge of current sports events--especially NFL and college football. He was an oft-frustrated fan of the UT Vols, the Chicago Cubs, and the Green Bay Packers. He was also an avid Bruce Springsteen fan having attended more than 30 concerts.

Mike had no interest in a big send-off, but he cared deeply for his dogs, Daisy and Lucy. He would be pleased by any donations made to the American Humane Society or any actions taken to help unwanted dogs. Donations to the American Heart Association or American Lung Association would also honor his memory.

While Mike did not want any sort of traditional memorial service, we will all celebrate the life of an amazing man in our own ways, times, and places.

Always a kind, fun guy Kolo was. I met him my Freshman year at CBHS. We always did lots of kidding around with `Rufus´. Rest in Peace Mike

Kolo was always kind to me, even though he was an upperclassman at CBHS. I always appreciated that about him. Funny guy! May his Family have peace.

For about a year, Mike & I shared an office together at the FedEx Hub in the early 1980´s. Mike & I also both graduated from Christian Brothers High School and we had many mutual friends. We became good friends over the years as we had much in common. We had many great discussions & many laughs.

We were both long time employees at FedEx. As happens in life, our paths
went separate ways. I haven´t seen Mike in many years but I have many great memories of Mike.

I am so sorry to hear of Mike´s passing. My condolences go out to his family and friends.
