Florence Dmytryk Obituary
Northampton, MA - Florence V. Dmytryk, 102, of Northampton, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at her home. She was born in Everett, MA on October 9, 1921, to the late John and Anna (Duda) Dmytryk.
She grew up on a farm in Westfield and attended schools there. After high school she graduated from Westfield State Teachers College, and later received a master's degree in Education from UMass. Ms. Dmytryk was a uniquely dedicated teacher who had a profound effect on her students, many of whom stayed in touch with her decades on. She taught in Paris, Panama, Connecticut, and for many years at Marks Meadow Elementary School in Amherst.
After she retired from teaching, she volunteered at the Cooley Dickinson Hospice store and with the Northampton Hug-a-bears, a group that makes stuffed bears for children at local hospitals and for distribution by emergency personnel. She was also a communicant for many years at the former St Mary's of the Assumption Church and more recently at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish.
Known for her generosity and contributions to her community, sharp intelligence, and capable independence, Ms. Dmytryk was a role model to many and a pillar of love and support to her family and friends. She lived surrounded by neighbors and friends who brought much joy to her life.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews: Diane Dmytryk and her husband Dal Coger of Medford; Gary Dmytryk and his wife Sanda Aung of Cambridge; John Dmytryk and his wife Jane of Norman, OK; Jon Dmytryk and his wife Welda of Milton, GA; Peter Dmytryk and his wife Nancy of Oakland, CA; and Elisa Davis and her husband John of Prattville, AL; as well as several great-nieces and one great great-niece.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Walter, John, and Edward.
Calling hours will be Saturday from 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM at the DROZDAL FUNERAL HOME, 120 Damon Rd., Northampton, followed by a Funeral Mass at 12 PM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, 99 King St., Northampton. Burial will be Monday July 1, 2024, at 12 PM in St. Hedwig Cemetery in Bedford, NH.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to The Friends of Forbes Library, PO. Box 1363, Northampton, MA 01060.

Miss Dmytryk was one of my mother´s good friends. I remember visiting her with my mother when I was a child. I remember her as being exceptionally kind. She had a very warm smile. She had a long life; I hope it was fulfilling.

Florence was a good friend to my mother and then to me. I always enjoyed my time with her. She was an interesting and engaging conversationalist, avid reader and lovely person. I will miss our lunches together at Barstow's.
