Charles Jenkins Obituary

Charles Edgar Jenkins III of Hernando, MS passed away in peace on September 14th, 2024, at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Memphis, TN.

Charles was born on February 24th, 1949, in Cherry, TN to Mary and Charles Edgar Jenkins II. He was the oldest of 5 siblings who all called him "Bubba". Growing up he played the big brother and family leader role in a low-income family that eventually moved to Frayser in Memphis, TN.

Charles graduated Humes High School in Memphis in 1967 where he proudly played basketball. He made the best decision of his life and married Charlotte Ballard Jenkins, also of Frayser, on April 14th, 1973, and remained married to her for 51 years. Charles and Charlotte together raised a son, Brad, and provided a loving home and all a boy could ever hope for from his parents.

Charles (Charlie) was a hard worker and manager at the Easy Way Produce stores in Memphis, TN where he retired after 42 years of dedicated service. He had a knack for customer service, often going above and beyond for customers, and could always charm and make people smile.

He enjoyed crappie fishing, especially at Arkabutla Lake. Charles was passionate about and played competitive men's fastpitch softball from his 20's through his late 50's with the Royals and eventually the Pomen with whom he played in and won multiple Masters National Championships. He was nominated to the Memphis Amateur Sports Hall of Fame for his successful fast pitch softball career.

Charles was always ready to help others whether it be helping them with a car or house payment or giving someone an employment opportunity when other employers wouldn't. He was often referred to by those who knew him as one of the nicest guys they know.

Charles and Charlotte moved to Hernando, MS in 1997 where they continued to live and raise two spoiled but loved Golden Retrievers, Beau and Chance. Charles was a member at Oak Grove Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for several years.

Charles is survived by his wife, Charlotte; dog, Chance; son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Jenne; brother, John; two sisters, Mary Wright and Libby Carter; and grandchildren and step grandchildren, Layne, Harper, Saylor, Isabel Wood, Harper Wood, and Hadley Wood.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, September 21st, at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 4440 W. Oak Grove Rd., Hernando, MS at 11:00 AM. Visitation will take place from 10:00 – 11:00 AM. Charles will be buried at Northridge Woodhaven Funeral Home in Millington, TN. There will be no graveside ceremony.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church, Hernando, MS.

Northridge Woodhaven Funeral Home and Cemetery, 6755 HWY 51 N. Millington, TN 38053, is in charge of arrangements.
