Barbara Raymond Obituary

Barbara Allen Raymond

Preston, CT - Barbara Allen Raymond, 91, of Preston, CT, passed away peacefully on October 23rd, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Greenfield, MA, on July 30, 1933, she was the daughter of Charles Henry Allen and Roxana {Spooner)Allen.

Barbara attended Greenfield Schools and graduated from Greenfield High School in 1951. She then furthered her education at Walnut Hill School, Natick MA , graduating in 1952.

On April 23, 1955, Barbara married John (Jack) Griswold Raymond at St. James Episcopal Church in Greenfield, MA. Though they were divorced in 1977, they remained close throughout their lives, sharing memories and staying connected through their children and grandchildren's milestones. Jack predeceased her on November 14, 2016.

During her early years in Bernardston, MA Barbara, enjoyed horseback riding and vegetable gardening, which blossomed into a lifelong passion for gardening. She also found joy in baking, especially during the holiday season, when she would make cookies and desserts from Thanksgiving through Christmas.

After moving to Preston, CT, Barbara expanded her vegetable garden and created beautiful flowerbeds. She treasured her mornings, sipping coffee and watching the birds through her dining room window, an arrangement her children lovingly set up for her.

Music was another passion of Barbara's life, particularly the works of Rod McKuen and classical Christmas music from the 1940s to the 1970s. She found peace in nature, taking long walks in the woods, learning about plants and animals. Her love for animals was evident in her bond with her beloved cat, Puddins, who will deeply miss her.

Barbara was known for her sharp wit, great sense of humor, and her joyful spirit. She cherished her time with friends and family, always welcoming them with a big smile and a hug, saying, "It's so nice to see you". She loved taking scenic drives with her son, Charles (Corky), and enjoyed traveling along the East Coast from Maine to the Carolinas. At 90, she embarked on an RV trip to North and South Carolina to visit with loved ones.

She is survived by her six children: Pamela Raymond (David Turner, deceased) of Hatfield, MA; Jael Raymond of Farmington, NM; Darcy Clymer (Ron) of Rutherfordton, NC; Charles Raymond with whom she made her home in Preston, CT. John Raymond (Linda) of Griswold, CT and David Raymond of Hatfield, MA., eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, two nieces, two nephews, and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

Barbara was predeceased by her brother, William Blake Allen II, with whom she shared a close bond. William (Bill) always looked out for his little sister, ensuring she was cared for and supported, a role later shared by her children. She also remained close to her sister-in-law, Joanne Flynn, throughout her life.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Visiting Angels and Beacon Hospice Care for their compassionate care and professionalism.

After cremation, Barbara's ashes will be laid to rest in the family plot at Green River Cemetery in Greenfield, MA. A graveside service for family and friends will take place on Wednesday, October 30th at 11:00 a.m. at Green River Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Barbara's memory may be made to Visiting Angels and Beacon Hospice Care. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home, Greenfield, MA.
