James Shortell Obituary

Dr. James R. Shortell

Greenfield, MA - Jim Shortell, 82, passed away after an illness at the Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA.

Jim graduated from Greenfield High School in 1960, where he competed in basketball and was voted Most Likely to Succeed. He went on to earn his bachelor's degree at Brown University and his master's degree and Ph.D. in psychology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

While completing his doctoral dissertation, he worked at the Mid-Fairfield Child Guidance Center in Norwalk, CT and was then invited to become the staff psychologist of the East Spoke inpatient behavioral health unit at the Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, where he worked for the majority of his career. After officially retiring, he continued to work for many years on behavioral health units at area hospitals including Franklin Medical Center, Providence Hospital, and the Brattleboro Retreat.

Throughout his school years and seemingly everywhere he worked, he forged friendships that continued throughout his lifetime. He enjoyed golf and pick-up basketball games with them, kayaking on day trips that generally involved a snack break halfway through, or driving to Maine for "Guys' Weekend," which was rumored to include the occasional poker game.

Jim enjoyed hiking with his kids, starting when they were very young and inspiring their love of the outdoors. Later in life, he traveled to hike with them in places like Arizona, Alaska, and Newfoundland, sometimes "cramming" in advance by hiking with a rock-laden backpack. He loved spending time on Cape Cod and the coast of Maine with his wife, kids, grandkids, and many combinations thereof.

Jim had a keen sense of humor which would often reveal itself with a wry smile that would peek through ahead of time. While working on the East Spoke, he organized the humorous in-house newsletter "The Loose Spoke" about and for his coworkers, and he personally designed holiday cards to uniquely tickle the recipient's funny bone. If he had written this obituary, he would no doubt have ended with a play on words to leave us grinning. Let's offer a tip of the hat to the funny, smart, gregarious man whom we miss dearly and who brightened our lives.

Jim was preceded by his brother Tom and parents Rob and Marge. He is survived by his wife Carol of 60 years, children Tim, Laurel, and Dan, granddaughters Andrea and Daniela, and cousins Rich, Ann, and Linda.

Plans for a gathering are incomplete at this time.

My condolences to Carol and the children. So sorry to hear of Jim's passing as we often spoke over recent years after I left town, and he never failed to poke adversity in the eye as I could still see him as he presided over the Spoke events and gatherings. He was truly the Maven of Mirth and none of us could escape his humor and good-natured jabs - that humor much appreciated and chronicled in the infamous Loose Spoke. A great guy, a good friend, a respected member of the community and Greenfield's finest psychologist. Rest in peace Jim.

My condolences to Carol and the entire family. The following poem is for Jim who will be missed tons and tons . . . David Goodman / Fellow East Spoke Ping Ponger and Deep Sea Fisherman :)

In Greenfield, MA, where hearts are light,
At Franklin Medical Center, a star took flight.
Jim Shortell, a psychologist with a heart of gold,
Left us with memories, stories to be told.
With humor sharp as a razor's edge,
He poked fun at us all, in a loving pledge.
His poems were masterpieces, full of rhyme and play,
Making us laugh, every single day.
In the East Spoke Unit, he shone so bright,
A beacon of joy, in the dark of night.
Biofeedback and tests, he knew them all,
MMPI, Rorschach, he stood tall.
He loved the outdoors, where adventure calls,
From football to skiing, he gave it his all.
Basketball, tennis, racketball too,
Golf and deep sea fishing, he knew what to do.
Cigars in hand, a twinkle in his eye,
He played poker like a pro, never saying goodbye.
His energy was special, his spirit so free,
A positive, playful soul, that's how he'd be.
So here's to Jim Shortell, a man of great zest,
Who left us with laughter, and a heart that's blessed.
Though he's gone, his legacy remains,
In the rhymes and the jokes, the fun and the games.
Rest in peace, dear Jim, your humor will stay,
In our hearts, where you'll always have a say.
You may be away, but not gone from sight,
You're still with us, in the laughter and light.

Jim was a good friend and colleague for the many years we were together at East Spoke. He was our poet laureate and a class act professionally and personally. The Memorial Day Weekends that he hosted for "The Boys" on Cape Cod are some of my most cherished memories. Good fellowship, bad poker and excellent vodka martinis. Rest in peace, Jim

I was fortunate to have worked with Jim on East Spoke from 73-77. He was a prince of a man and an excellent clinician. I will fondly remember poker games, fishing weekends at the Cape, as well as spirited ping-pong matches on the unit and Sunday morning basketball at Stoneleigh Burnham. I last saw him 2 years ago as his health was declining. He exuded grace and class, always. A truly wonderful friend. Rest in peace.

Reading through these poignant memories of Jim inevitably brought smiles, laughter and tears remembering what a unique and kind man he was. The Loose Spoke was unrivaled in its range of storytelling, poetry and news and left us all laughing heartily as Jim poked some fun to lift us up as the work we were doing together was not always easy. But he and the Loose Spoke carried us through and left us as Jim has remembering the bonds we all created with his help. A truly wonderful person.

So sorry to hear of Jim's passing and agree with all of my East Spoke friends. I remember some very happy times working together on the East Spoke and Jim was always a part of these times. The Loose Spoke was a quality newsletter that we all looked forward to. Jim was a lot of fun and enjoyed working with all of the unit staff. Enjoyed staying at his rental properties both in Maine and the Cape when my kids were young. A very wise and caring man that I always adored. Rest in peace Jim.

The Eastspoke crowd was so much fun because of Jim. He was always a bright light and so smart and great with words. The Loose Spoke was as good as the Harvard Onion. He brought us together with the help of a talented group. I feel so fortunate to have worked with him and everyone at Eastspoke. I will miss him and think of his positive outlook and great humor. We are all better off because of Jim.

I met Jim our freshman year at Brown, and he was my college roommate our junior and senior years. We remained friends since then, even chatting a couple of times a week over the last ten years. Jim was a smart, charming, fun-loving guy who never let adversity get him down.

Carole and I wish to offer our sincerest condolences on Jim´s passing. Jim and I go way back to when he joined the staff at the Franklin County Mental Health Center across the street from the East Spoke. He was a great middleman between our two shrinks, Dr. Stanford and Dr. Merle. Besides a colleague, Jim was also a good friend who was always up for a game of tennis and to help lug a refrigerator up four flights of stairs. We shared a love of being at the ocean and he often spoke fondly of his place at the shore in Maine. I will miss his wry sense of humor, wonderful photos and his updates from the Recorder on the latest happenings in Greenfield. He was a faithful and special member of the "Wednesday morning breakfast club" and next time I am at Denny´s I will order "two eggs over easy on crispy hash" in his honor.
