Timothy Gessing Obituary

Timothy J. Gessing

Greenfield, MA - Timothy (Tim) James Gessing, 64, of Greenfield passed away at home on December 3, 2024 after a lengthy illness. He will be forever missed but not forgotten by those who loved him.

He was born in North Kingston, R.I., at the Quonset Point Naval Air Base Hospital in Rhode Island on Sept. 18 1960. He was the only son of Thomas and Barbara (Paulin) Gessing. Tim is survived by a son Nicholas Gessing and granddaughter Mara, his parents Thomas (Joan) Gessing and Barbara (Allen) Ripingill, two sisters Paula (Bob) Tobiason of Colorado and their children Ryan and Sarah, Lisa Fischer of Colorado and her children Austin, Jackson and Alex Fischer, and many step siblings, uncles, and cousins.

Tim spent most of his childhood and formative years in San Diego CA attending elementary and high school in Poway CA. He attended Jr. College before joining the US Navy in 1981. While in the Navy he served on the USS O'Brian and was honorably discharged in 1985 as a Petty Officer Second Class. During his tour with the Navy he earned his Associates Degree and attended CU Boulder CO after his discharge. He was employed as an Inspector at Kennametal in Greenfield until becoming disabled.

Tim had a love of nature, hiking and the ocean. He enjoyed cooking and had many hobbies including his aquariums, rock and shell collecting, ancient history and science. He was an avid gardener, loved to read, had an inquisitive mind, an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and he was an intense researcher.

There will be a private burial service. The family would like to thank his medical team at Valley Medical, Bay State, and Cooley Dickinson Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tim's memory to the American Cancer Society (directed to the state of Massachusetts) at cance.org, or American Cancer Society, 3 Speen St. Suite 250, Framingham, MA 01701 McCarthy Funeral Homes entrusted with Tim's care and arrangements.
