Sheldon Boege passed away peacefully at home on December 22, 2024 from pancreatic cancer. He was 81. Sheldon was born in Fullerton, CA on March 17, 1943, the son of Sally and Gerald Boege. He graduated from Stanford University in 1965 with a BA in History. As a member of the university's tennis team his biggest thrill was playing Arthur Ashe in doubles and witnessing up close Ashe's incredibly smooth and powerful backhand. After college Sheldon went east where he met his future wife, Betsy (née Fenollosa), at The Fletcher School at Tufts University. Sheldon graduated with a Master's degree in International Relations. A long career at Citibank in its International Division followed with postings in the Philippines, Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia and Greece (where his responsibilities included countries in the Middle East and North Africa). In 1998 he became Managing Director of Saudi Hollandi Bank, a subsidiary of ABN AMRO Bank in Riyadh. Upon returning to the States Betsy and Sheldon lived in Darien CT before moving to New London NH in 2001. Sheldon led many classes for Adventures in Learning, the lifelong learning program at Colby-Sawyer College. He served on the boards of the Lake Sunapee Region VNA & Hospice and the Newport Tennis Club and was a member of the Baker Hill Golf Club. When his tennis playing days ended, he took up ceramics and was a dedicated, enthusiastic potter. An avid reader he also devoted much time to writing historical fiction and adventure stories for his grandchildren. Sheldon is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betsy; son Neil and daughter-in-law Katherine Bradley of Glen Allen, VA; daughter Lisa Loomis and son-in-law Aaron, of Huntington, VT; and brother Alan, of La Habra Heights, CA. He also leaves behind three beautiful granddaughters, Isla and Eloise Boege, and Willa Loomis. The family expresses their gratitude to the LSRVNA Hospice team and the doctors at New London Hospital for their compassionate care during Sheldon's yearlong illness. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lake Sunapee Region VNA & Hospice or to Colby-Sawyer College. A remembrance service will be held at a later date.
