Robert Lawrence Carroll

Leeds, MA - Robert Lawrence Carroll, known affectionately as Bob or Bobby, passed away on January 11, 2025, in Leeds, Massachusetts, at the age of 79. Born on January 23, 1945, in Connecticut, Bob spent his formative years in Concord, Massachusetts, where he was raised by his mother, Mary Carroll (née Culkins), and her husband, James Carroll. Even in his youth, Bob revealed a compassionate spirit, one that would guide his every endeavor in the years to come.



After completing his studies at Georgetown University, Bob answered a call to service that defined much of his life. He served in the Peace Corps in Niger from June 20, 1967, to August 4, 1968, offering aid and support to communities in need. Shortly thereafter, from November 22, 1968, to August 28, 1970, he served in the U.S. Army, demonstrating the quiet courage and dedication that were hallmarks of his character.



Upon his return, Bob married Ricki Carroll (née Greenberg) in 1974 and moved to Ashfield, Massachusetts the following year. There, he set his sights on helping delinquent adolescents awaiting trial, working tirelessly to bring stability and comfort to those who needed it most. In 1978, he and Ricki founded New England Cheesemaking Supply Company, pioneering the world of home cheese making. The couple welcomed two beloved daughters, Jennifer (1980) and Sarah (1984). Although Bob and Ricki divorced in 1992, Bob remained deeply devoted to his family.



In 1997, Bob's life took a bright turn when he met Paul Whitehead, beginning a loving partnership that lasted the remainder of his years. Around this time, Bob worked at a foster home for at risk children in Springfield, Massachusetts, a dialysis center in Chicopee, and led a safety program for drunk drivers-another reflection of his compassionate heart-all while pursuing higher education. In 2000, he earned a Master's degree in Social Work from Springfield College and soon joined the VA Medical Center in Leeds, Massachusetts, where he served as a social worker until 2012. Recognized for his unwavering commitment, Bob received an Outstanding Committee Member Award in 2008 for his work with Stand Down. His empathy and dedication touched countless veterans, leaving an enduring legacy of care.



Bob and Paul were married in 2013, and together they built a life filled with an enduring love and commitment for each other. Along with his husband, Paul Whitehead, Bob is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Carroll (and partner Camilo Rodriguez III) and Sarah Carroll (and husband Mark Chrabascz); grandchildren, Jocelyn Chrabascz and Camilo Rodriguez lV; brothers, Leo Carroll (wife Michelle; children Megan, Michael, and Katie; grandchildren Joseph III, Evangeline and Henry) and Jimmy Carroll (wife Consuelo; and children Gabrielle and Elise); Paul's children, Paul Whitehead Jr. and Marquis Whitehead; and grandchildren Marquis Whitehead Jr. and Donovin Whitehead. Bob's steadfast devotion to family and friends, his tireless work on behalf of others, and his readiness to offer kindness will remain a shining example for all who knew him.
