Janice Healy Obituary

JANICE HEALY

Conway, MA - Our hearts break to share the news that Jan unexpectedly passed away on December 23, 2025 after a long battle with Parkinsons disease.

Born in Somerville, MA to Thomas and Teresa Healy, she graduated from Chelmsford Highschool in 1973 and obtained her B.A. from the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) in 1978 where she fell in love with the Pioneer Valley.

Jan attended Suffolk University Law School in Boston and prepared herself for a career in civil rights and criminal justice. As a third-year law student, she interned for the Massachusetts Defenders Committee and upon graduation accepted a staff attorney position in the Springfield office. Between 1981 and 1986, she represented criminal defendants in the trial courts throughout Hampden County. Jan entered private practice in 1987, expanding her work to include civil litigation across the region.

In 1998, Attorney General Thomas F. Reilly appointed Jan as Chief of the Western Massachusetts Regional Office where she returned to public service. In 2011, she was chosen by newly elected Northwestern District Attorney David E. Sullivan as his Deputy District Attorney and remained in that position until her retirement in 2019. During her tenure, Jan worked closely with the courts and local schools on juvenile justice and coordinated efforts to create the office's Juvenile Diversion Program.

Jan was passionate about film, music and the arts. She was deeply drawn to the natural world and enjoyed photography, painting and gardening. Some of her favorite time was spent on the beaches of Cape Cod and hiking trails near her home in Conway. You could often find Jan in a local bookshop, movie theatre, café or art gallery in the company of her closest friends. She was a voracious reader who loved everything from poetry to novels to political commentary. Always current on world affairs, Jan was eager to share ideas and learn from the opinions of others. Although notorious for her baking skills and "sweet tooth", she was an avid cook who embraced healthy eating and supported the local farm community.

Above all, Jan's greatest pride and joy was her family. She leaves behind her devoted husband of forty years, Geoffrey White, and their two sons, Christopher and Andrew White. She is survived by her cherished three siblings, Joanne, Thomas and Paul Healy, and six nieces and nephews, Katherine, Meaghan, Devinne, Jennifer, Matthew and Colby. She also leaves her two sisters-in-law, Diane Healy and Heather Wellborn, and two brothers-in-law, David Miner and Byron White.

A celebration of Jan's life will take place at 1:00 p.m. on April 6, 2025 in the Garden House at Look Park, 300 North Main Street, Northampton, MA. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her memory to support the Parkinson's Disease Research Fund at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center by visiting http://www.bidmc.org/giving or by check made payable to "Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center" with "Janice Healy/Parkinson's Disease Research Fund" in the memo line. Just a quick story about Janice.

When I began to practice in 1983, Janice was already one the true advocates of the defense bar, a true "tiger" and advocate for her clients, the law, and justice. Janice was one of the people that immediately caught and captivated my attention in the hopes that I could emulate her advocacy and legal talent. With that "at a distance mentoring" a little bit of her legal ability "rubbed off" onto me. I am grateful to have learned what I did from watching her in action in the District and Superior Court Rooms at the Springfield Hall of Justice. Just thought you should know the one of the ways she positively affected the legal bar.

My deep and sincere condolences.
