Marian met the love of her life while still in high school. George Miller won her heart and, later, her hand in marriage. The young couple had to wait until George returned from serving in the Navy during WW II to begin their life together. George attended Memphis State University and Marian worked at the draft board until George graduated and accepted a teaching and coaching job in Selmer, Tennessee. Their first child (Danny) was born in Selmer, but the family eventually moved to Memphis, Tennessee – Suzanne and Melinda were born there. George and Marian were able to celebrate 55 years of marriage before George entered into his rest in 2002.
Marian was a faithful steward of God's Word and was always called upon when there was a need for prayer. She was a long-time Precept Bible-study leader and also enjoyed teaching Vacation Bible School and children's church over the years. Marian also enjoyed serving as a tour guide at Bellevue Baptist Church. She lived her life as a woman of great faith and modeled what a true servant's heart should be.
Marian (known to her grandchildren and--eventually to all-- as Mimi) supported all of them, children and grandchildren alike, in their athletic and other endeavors whether it was football or Boy Scouts, swimming or horse shows, baseball or high school musicals, soccer games or cheerleading, Mimi was there to cheer them on! She loved to brag on her children, grandchildren and greats and enjoyed showing off news clippings of their awards and honors to her friends. In fact, Mimi said her greatest accomplishment was her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Another proud accomplishment was that on her 91st birthday, Mimi wrote down 91 words of wisdom (an idea from her granddaughter, Madalyn) which was made into a book to be shared with family and future generations.
Mimi also enjoyed travel. Her Christmas card on her 83rd birthday was a photograph of her riding a camel outside the ancient city of Petra. She also traveled through Europe with her dear friend, Johnnie Morton. She visited many other places with George at business conventions where, on occasion, the two of them were seen dancing a lively jitterbug when musical entertainment was provided.
Mimi was a wonderful cook and made the best homemade pizza in the world. She and Big Daddy (as the grandkids came to call George) teamed up from time to time to make a traditional Miller family breakfast, tomato gravy and biscuits, much to the delight of the kids and grandkids. Many family events were held at their home where all enjoyed good food, great fellowship, and the occasional game of touch football.
There are many other things we could mention about our beloved Mimi her gift of gab (it was difficult to end a phone call with her because she always said there was "just one more thing"), her sense of humor, her kindness to so many, and her love for her family. We will leave it at this. Marian had a great impact on all who knew her. She was an amazing woman who lived an amazing life.
Marian was predeceased by her husband, George Miller, her parents, Elmo and Jewell Mann, and her brothers, Jerry Mann and Dr. James Mann. Three children, Danny (Kathy), Suzanne (Glenn), and Melinda (Jamie) survive her as do her amazing grandchildren Kristin (Jim), Peter, Brie, Madalyn (Andrew), Mallory (Steven), Miller, Jennie (David), and Grant (Peyton). She also has 10 great grandchildren who we will make sure hear about Mimi and all of her exploits. Marian's sisters-in-law, Gloria Mann and Kitty Mann also survive her, as well as well as a host of nieces and nephews and close friends as she moves into her Heavenly home. We also give special thanks to her companion and caregiver, Regina Webster, the nurses and aides at The Bridge in Columbia, Tennessee, and the nurses and aides of Compassus. Danny and Suzanne want to acknowledge the care our sister, Melinda and her husband, Jamie, gave to Mom during the last years of her life.
One phrase sums up Marian's life it was a life well-lived and a great testimony to her deep faith and love for the Lord. We look forward to meeting her again. Until then, go rest high on that mountain, and we carry you in our hearts until we are together again.
