Paul Canada Obituary
In Loving Memory of Paul Willis Canada
Paul Willis Canada, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Olive Branch, Mississippi, on February 24, 2025, just two days shy of his 93rd birthday. Born in Bogota, Tennessee, on February 26, 1932, Paul lived a life rich with resilience, love, and adventure.
He was preceded in death by his beloved spouse, Valeria Canada, and his daughter, Shelly Hylander. Paul leaves behind his loving children, Chris Canada, Rick Hylander, and Angie Hylander. He was a cherished grandfather to Christian Canada (wife, Kimberly Canada), Matthew Hylander, Brittany Carroll, Michael Hylander, Corbin Williams, Kala Knox, Brandy Fountain, and Jordan Hylander. He was also a proud great-grandfather to seven great-grandchildren, with one more on the way. Paul is survived by his brother, Ray Canada.
At the age of 5, Paul and his younger brother, Ray, were caught in the devastating flood of 1937. The floodwater rose so rapidly that the family had to be rescued by boat while standing on the porch of their home. This early experience of survival marked the beginning of a life filled with challenges that Paul would meet with strength and courage.
A story often shared by his brother Ray highlights Paul's quick reflexes and his ever-present sense of humor. As children, Ray and his cousin would often tease Paul and hide out in the barn. One day, Paul, in search of them, spotted Ray's leg and took a shot with his BB gun. Paul's accuracy with any firearm, including a bow, became legendary in his family.
In his teenage years, Paul and his family moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he attended Humes High School alongside a young Elvis Presley. At 17, just before turning 18, Paul joined the Army National Guard, later serving in the Korean War. One of Paul's most memorable and terrifying experiences occurred when he was delivering supplies, and his truck broke down deep in enemy territory. Forced to spend the night alone in the truck, he was miraculously rescued the following day by U.S. Army soldiers, who helped him get the truck running again.
After being honorably discharged, Paul embarked on a 39-year career with Memphis Light Gas and Water starting as a Lineman Helper. Over the years he worked his way up the ranks, serving as a Lineman, troubleshooter, and shift supervisor.. He spent over 25 years working in storm-damaged areas, often facing perilous conditions. One of the most poignant moments of his career came when he had to rescue a fellow lineman who had tragically lost his life due to an electrocution. Paul's work ethic and dedication were evident throughout his career, and he eventually rose to the position of District Supervisor at the North Service Center. Upon retiring, on April 27, 1991. Paul reflected on his long career with pride, always saying he would do it all over again.
Outside of work, Paul was a man of strength and discipline, and he believed strongly in staying fit. He often worked out alongside his son, passing on his love for fitness and healthy living. In his younger years, Paul also enjoyed boxing and even competed in the Golden Gloves.
An avid outdoorsman, Paul had a passion for fishing and deer hunting. He frequently went on fishing trips with friends from work, where he was always selected to cook breakfast because of his renowned homemade milk gravy a family tradition he passed down to his son. In his later years, Paul took up deer hunting, where he earned a reputation for bagging numerous trophy bucks with his trusty 30/30 rifle and bow.
But above all, Paul cherished his family and his faith. He was a devoted member of Goodman Oaks Church of Christ, where he regularly brought his grandchildren to worship. Paul's faith was evident in every aspect of his life. He never met a stranger, always greeting people with a warm handshake and a genuine smile. His love for people and his strong sense of community made him a friend to all who knew him.
Paul was also a avid dancer and attended the senior citizens dances at Snowden Grove and other various places in DeSoto County, MS.
Paul's legacy will live on through his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as well as the countless friends whose lives he touched. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, a man of integrity, humor, and deep faith. Paul will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, March 8 at 9:00 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 10:00 a.m. all in the Riverside Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Crittenden Memorial Park, Marion, Arkansas
