Richard Hiller Obituary

Richard Cristil Hiller passed away at the age of 78 on Thursday morning, March 6, with his two sons by his side.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Susan Young Hiller, sons Nathan and Matthew, brother Roy (Charlene), and numerous other friends and family. He was born, raised, and lived in Memphis, Tennessee. Richard was a 1965 graduate of East High School and 1987 graduate of Memphis State University. A "jack of all trades," Richard retired as an electrician with the IBEW Local 474 in 2014.

A lifelong member of Temple Israel congregation, Richard was known to occupy front seats at Friday night services along with his wife. They often attended Torah study on Saturdays and many other frequent activities of the congregation.

Richard's adult life revolved around his family. He was an ever-faithful husband that was dedicated to the care of his wife. He always ensured her needs were taken care of before his own. Susan's activities were also Richard's and he attended creative writing workshops with her among many other activities.

He was heavily involved in the actives of his sons which started with Scouting, continuing his involvement in Troop 25 and the Chickasaw Council well after they both earned the rank of Eagle Scout and aged out of scouts. He was the epitome of a "Band Dad," building things for the band program at Overton HS and faithfully attending concerts and marching contests. When Nathan found a passion for magic, Richard rekindled his enthusiasm too. He joined the International Brotherhood of Magicians (Ring 16) and was active with in-person and virtual meetings locally and nationally. He was also a dedicated member of the Mid South Woodturner's Guild.

Funeral services will be held at 3pm on Monday, March 10 at the Temple Israel Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in Richard's name to the Southern Poverty Law Center or another organization that fights for civil rights.

I was in the Creative Writing Group with Richard and Susan. They were the cornerstone of the group, dependable members. Richard was a fountain of information of all sorts. He is a huge loss to the Senior Center and our group. We miss him and Susan who cannot attend anymore. They were both Memorable Characters, the kind Readers Digest used to feature. They generously shared information about their faith. They were proud of their sons. They cherished their cats.
Deepest sympathy to family and friends. Thankful for memories, their stories and poems, and their dedication to the Senior Center and its members.

I only met Richard once, but have many fond memories of him through stories shared by Susan. My belated sympathies to Susan and the entire family.

I had known Richard since the 1960s, and his wife Susan since the 1960s. I saw them regularly. I am sorry to learn of his passing.
