Marion McClure Obituary

Dr. Marion Dugdale McClure departed this life on July 6, 2025 after a brief illness. Born to British parents in Peru, Marion graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1950. When she stated her intentions of becoming a physician, her father advised her to attend Harvard Medical School, as it was the only such American institution recognized by the British authorities. She was among the first female graduates. She gave up a career in the far-flung reaches of the British Empire when she met her husband James while an intern in North Carolina. Moving to Memphis, she joined the faculty of what is now the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, where she worked for over 55 years. During her long tenure, she taught Hematology to thousands of young physicians and other health professionals, as well as treating thousands of patients with various blood disorders. In her free time, she loved reading, gardening, the opera, knitting, bird watching, caring for her family, and taking walks along the Mississippi River. She was a member of St. James Anglican Church. Her husband James proceeded her in death in 2016. She is survived by her daughter Dr. Emily McClure Santaliz, son-in-law Pedro Santaliz, grandson Seth A. Santaliz, all of Cotuit MA, son John McClure of Memphis, and beloved rescue cat Abby. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Girls Inc., St. James Anglican Church, or the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Visitation will be held at 1:00 pm, with a memorial service at 2:00pm on July 19, 2025 at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Ave. in Memphis.

I had the privilege of doing a rotation in my fellowship training under the tutelage of Dr Dugdale years ago. She was always very patient with me and quite approachable. I can honestly say that I learned from one of the best professors. She will be greatly missed. To borrow an ancient proverb, "If you think in terms of a year, plant a seed; if in terms of ten years, plant trees; if in terms of 100 years, teach the people".

There will never be another like her. She was my hemophilia doctor for many years and I honestly used her as my primary care and infectious disease doctor, too. She really wanted me to get doctors in my hometown to treat me for routine care but I kept making excuses for not doing so. I wanted her to be making all my medical decisions and it was worth the hour and a half drive to be seen by the best. I am still alive thanks in large part to her. Heaven was designed and intended for people like Dr. Marion Dugdale.

There are not enough words to describe my love and admiration for Dr. Marion Dugdale. I was blessed to work with her in the hemophilia clinic for over 30 years. Her devotion to her patients and staff along with her sharp mind and wit were powerful testament to the gifted and amazing person that she was.

Dr. Dugdale was so brilliantly smart that you could not help but learn hematology from her. She could inspire students to learn and would be there for any questions with further explanations. She was an ultimate teacher and physician.

Marion Dugdale pioneered the treatment of hemophilia in the Midsouth. She was an accomplished Hematologist as well as an Internal Medicine physician. She was smart as a whip. Her care for her patients demonstrated cutting edge medicine practiced with common sense. She was not only my Professor but my Colleague. If anyone had a life well lived,it was Doctor Marion Dugdale.
