Martha Corcoran Obituary

Martha Jane Corcoran

Leverett, MA - Martha Jane (Carr) Corcoran, 78, of Leverett, MA, died peacefully on June 6, 2025, at Bay State Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, MA, with her brother and caretaker Patrick John Carr at her side. She had experienced a period of declining health for the past several years.

She was born on January 17, 1947, in Gardner, MA, to Patrick James and Doris (Bernard) Carr. She graduated in 1964 from Gardner High School, and from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a degree in Animal Science.

Martha Jane moved to the Leverett area in the late 1970s and lived there for the remainder of her life. While she was probably most well-known in her role as a landlord and manager of several rental properties in Amherst and surrounding towns, she was also an avid horsewoman, a caterer at the Pioneer Auction House, and a manager of Watroba's Market. She loved living on her farm with her horses and Collies, listening to country music, and hosting annual Kentucky Derby parties. She was always available to friends in need, took pleasure in pet sitting, and shared her love of horses with everyone who visited the farm. She was very proud of her Irish citizenship and heritage.

She was predeceased by her parents and a beloved uncle, John A. Carr, who lived with the family as another cherished parent. She leaves siblings Karen Sietsema (Bill) and Tish Peterson (Pete) of Renville, MN; Dorisann Heininger (Rick) of Sudbury, MA; her brother Patrick John Carr of Leverett, MA; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Martha Jane also leaves her former husband Matthew Corcoran of Leverett, MA, and countless friends in the area (you know who you are). WALSTIB.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Earlier today

I met Martha Jane through her work as a landlord. What started as a business relationship became a friendship. I remember one trip to the Brimfield antique show. Martha Jane shared her strategies for getting the best prices for the antique treasures we found there. I enjoyed every minute of that outing!
