James Caterbone Obituary

James Francis Caterbone III
January 6, 1961 - July 11, 2025
James Francis Caterbone III entered into eternal rest on July 11, 2025, doing what he loved most-softball. James is survived by his loving wife, Guiseppina (Pina) Coppola Caterbone; his parents, Margaret (Pinto) Caterbone and James Caterbone Jr.; his sister, Jacqueline (Christopher) Gaertner; nephews Christopher James (Kathryn) Gaertner and Ryan Alexander Gaertner and his fiancée, McKynna Karolyi. James is also survived by his in-laws, Carmine and Maria Coppola; his brother-in-law, Maurice (Dana) Coppola; his niece, Alexa Coppola; and nephew, Michael Coppola. James earned his Bachelor's Degree in 1982 from Fairfield University's School of Business. He was the Lead of Problem Management in the Infrastructure & Operations Department at Subway for over 15 years. He was also the classified ad representative for The Stamford Advocate for 15 years and was a member of the Connecticut Realtors Association for over 16 years with Coldwell Banker and William Raveis.
Jim, known as "Jim Cat," was an avid softball player. He simply loved the GAME. His career spanned over 39 years, playing locally in Stamford and neighboring towns of Norwalk, Westport, Greenwich, and wherever else he could play. You would mostly find him on a Tuesday night at Cummings 2, smashing the ball around the field. He also played on a national level, earning two Triple Crown titles with RTN 4 Corners in 2002 and 2004, where he earned National All-American Second Team honors. When he entered his "senior years" of over-50 ball, he played virtually all year round-from Florida to Virginia to Tennessee, the Carolinas, Arizona, Utah, and others-with the crowning moment ending the season at the SSUSA World Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is the tournament that everyone wants to win. He achieved that goal in 2021 with HardHat Cafe/Latella's, winning the 50 Major Division, where he earned himself an All-Tournament selection. He wore #23 for Don Mattingly, "The Hitman," but in reality, he is the "Hit Man"-he hit them long and far; some are still going.
Friends and family may call at the Lacarenza Macari Funeral Home, located at 8 Schuyler Ave, Stamford, CT 06902, on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, from 4 to 8 PM. Funeral Mass will be held at The Church of Saint Cecilia, 1184 Newfield Ave, Stamford, CT 06905, on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Senior Softball USA, memo "Jim Caterbone" so they may donate the money to the January 2026 Caribbean Classic Goodwill Tour in the Dominican Republic. SSUSA's Goodwill Tours donate funds and softball/baseball equipment to impoverished kids and teens in the Dominican, so they may experience the joy of softball like Jim and so many of us. Mail donations to: 9823 Old Winery Pl. #12, Sacramento, CA 98527 or The Stamford Parks & Recreation, 888 Washington Blvd, 6th Floor, Stamford, CT 06901, in memory of James F. Caterbone III. Burial service for Jimmy will be private.

I am so sorry to read this terrible news. I knew Jim very well in Little League and then we were good friends in High School, which now seems like ancient history. One of the great memories I have of Jim was going to Manhattan with him and two other young guys to see "Beatlemania" on Broadway at the "Winter Garden Theater" but not before stopping at the "Brew and Burger" a then popular chain that served Hamburgers and all the beer you could drink. As I recall, none of us were exactly of legal drinking age which made the evening even more adventurous.

RIP Jim.

To the Caterbone family, I am so sorry to hear about Jim's passing. He was a great kid as I coached him in Senior Babe Ruth and umpired a ton of his games in Softball while also playing with him. He was always smiling and was a great person to be associated with. He'll certainly be missed by many.
