Joan Saperstan Obituary

Joan Saperstan

Amherst, MA - Joan Saperstan (born Dec. 4, 1944 in Lowell, MA) died peacefully on June 18, 2025 in Brattleboro, VT.

Joan was blessed with a long career as a psychotherapist. After graduating from Northeastern University in 1966, and training at Simmons University School of Social Work, she began her therapy practice in 1968. One of the best decisions of her life was to undertake a two-year program in Spiritual Direction; mentoring others in this practice was a central part of her professional and religious life. Her therapy practice was enhanced by both her training as a spiritual director and skill in dealing with trauma. She was loved and valued during her 55 years of practice which came to an end only three months before she died.

Joan was active for decades in the Jewish Community of Amherst, where she served on various committees including the Religion Committee and the JCA Board. She loved being outdoors, especially walking and working in the gardens she shared with her wife, and was a committed composter. Of all living creatures, trees were her favorite.

Joan is survived by her spouse of 28 years, Josette Henschel; her son Andrew Janiak, daughter-in-law Rebecca Stein, stepsons Tobin and Loren Ludwig and their wives Jourdan Lawlor Ludwig and Yulia Frumer; grandchildren Isaac and Saul Janiak Stein, and Remy, Moses, and Louis Ludwig. She was predeceased by Chester Janiak, the father of Andrew. She also leaves behind her very dearest friends Lisa Kirschenbaum of Amherst, MA and Kim Clark of Sharon, VT.

Joan's energy, warmth, integrity, and wise counsel will be missed by many friends and colleagues in the Pioneer Valley, Boston area, and beyond. Donations in her memory may be made to Compassion & Choices, The Comfort Project, Abortion Rights Fund of Western Mass, World Central Kitchen or the organization of your choice.

Joan was a friend through Joan Bredin-Price, and I have a handful of great memories of get-togethers in a range of venues for birthdays and other occasions-- along with Josette, of course! Joan also befriended me with a recommendation of a therapist at some point in time: a good tip and another reason to appreciate Joan, with her wisdom and joyous presence. My heart-felt consolences to Josette. With much love, Nancy

A lovely, kind, honest, no b.s. human being, Joan was very helpful to me, years ago. I´d just been thinking of her recently, out of the blue, and now I understand why. May her memory be a blessing.
