So sad to hear of Ryne Sandberg's passing. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time. Ryne was a hall of fame baseball player, which we all watched grow over his playing years. "The Sandberg Game" left an indelible mark on all Cubs fans, including myself, which showed how hard work, perseverance, dedication and respect turned out to be a representation of a hall of famer's career. His love of the Cubs and the fans was very apparent, I just hope he knew that the feelings were mutual. How he carried himself, both on and off the field, was a testament to him as a person and an example for all of us to strive to be. My condolences to Ryne's family and friends, and to all Cubs nation. We have lost a truly wonderful person and baseball player. As they say, he was "Second to none". Rest in peace Ryno, job well done.

Sandberg has been my all time favorite Cub. I can remember as a young child, watch games with Sandberg. My 1st game I attended was in 97 were I was able to see my hero play. I later bought an authentic Sandberg jersey across the street from wrigley. We lost a treasure of a man, on and off the field. RIP Ryno

I am deeply saddened by the news of Ryne's passing. Ryne Sandberg (#23) was my favorite baseball player of all time. I went to several games at Wrigley Field and Riverfront Stadium just to see him play. Back in the day, I would trade any baseball card just to accumulate more and more Sandberg cards and commit his stats to memory, amassing hundreds of "Ryno" cards during that time. I just wished I could've met him in person. At least I was able to see the great "Ryno" play the game. I count myself lucky to have been able to do so. He was a great ball player and, from what I hear, even a greater family man and man of faith. You are sorely missed Ryne and am praying for the family during this difficult time. I will never forget the greatest gold glove second baseman of all time, the Cubs #23, Ryne Dee Sandberg. May you be at peace in God's kingdom, from one of your many long-time fans. No Cubs fan will ever forget what he brought to baseball. May comfort and strength be given to Ryne's family and friends...

Paul, the apostle, wrote in 2 Timothy 4:7-8:
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing." (NASB1995)

Rest in peace "Ryno"...

We buried my big brother in his jersey when he passed away on 9/12/15..he was my absolute favorite ballplayer. So many good memories running home from school with him to watch Cub games. We used to play wiffle ball in my yard and I would pretend to be him ( pretty funny as a 7 yr old girl in 84. ) God bless you Ryno...you made my childhood what it was. Thank you. #23 forever. Ryne was the reason I fell in love with Cubs baseball at age 13. I couldn't get enough of him and this team. It was the first time I felt passionate about something and it was a cherished way to connect with my Dad. Ryne embodied the spirit of hard work, humility, teamwork, and excellence in his craft. I will never forget the absolute awe as I watched his career unfold.

I can only imagine that an athlete of his caliber was an even better human being, a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. I regret not knowing him as a person as Im sure that is where he shined the brightest.

All now passed Cub fans are waiting at home plate to welcome him to his real home. Im sure it even outshines Wrigley.

My deepest sympathies to his family and friends grieving him as a cherished part of their lives. May you find comfort and peace knowing he is no longer in pain.

My Heartfelt Condolences to The Ryne Sandberg Family, (passéd away at 5:23pm today at age 65), Friends and Fellow #23 Fans. I despise Cancer. Ryne passed away at home today with family by his side. Among my numerous memories: He watched me officiate his Grandsons in Lake Forest Youth Basketball(over the last 15 years) and Lake Bluff House and Travel Baseball(over the last 5 years) (we just spoke around a month ago between innings while cheering on his Grandson Dillon-8u);(a few weeks ago in talking to his son(coach of 8u), We talked & Ryne wasn´t able to attend the game- I hate Cancer!). Years ago I enthusiastically chanted ICE COLD QUALITY RYNE Ryne Sandberg Pepsi & Ice COLD Jody Davis QUALITY 7-up & became friends with both players & watched them practice, especially Ryne with Larry Bowa taking fungos, many hours before the game to get ready for his Hall of Fame career as the finest 2nd baseman ever!!! I watched Ryne every morning taking ground balls with Bowa working hard to master his craft- Ryne was ALWAYS determined to give his very best-He had a Very Strong work ethic to admire-He was 1 of my NEVER EVER GIVE UP mentors. He would leave tickets at Will call under "QUALITY" for my Mom at no cost to go to games during my summers of vending mainly to the Right Field Box & Right Field Bleachers. Ryne was extremely genuine, humble & kind, ALWAYS polite, very thoughtful. He loved Maggie(30 years), his children(5) & grandchildren(13) & was an always OPTIMISTIC TRULY LOYAL Cub Fan)! ***May Ryne Sandberg´s memory & his #23´s memory be a blessing. ya Ryne now & forever Seat # 23 will be reserved for you, 4ever my friend

I moved to Spokane in 1972. Played baseball at Salk Jr. High. Rene was at Havermale. Did not really notice him until high school. I went to Shadle Park HS. He went to historic North Central HS. 3 sport athlete. Baseball. Which he did with such ease. Hit. Run. Field. Football too. Ryne was fleet of foot. RPO. Scrambler. Good passer. Hard to catch. Basketball too. His senior year average was 19 ppg. Could shoot lights out with no 3pt arch. Could jump.out the gym too. Truly a great sports star. One of Spokanes best. He always seemed to do things with such ease. Smooth. No one worked around 2nd base like him. His footwork on double plays was the stuff to watch, learn and duplicate. RIP Ryne. Glad I got to see you start out.

Ryno, you have been my hero before you were a superstar. Something about you connected with me.my birthday is September 22 1969 so maybe it´s the zodiac. Regardless I could not have asked for a better role model. Your quiet demeanor, your love for your job and the game in additon to the love of your fans. I have many memories of your life. The day I won your autograph at the 2008 Cubs Convention, attending the game when they retired your number and I shouted Ryno you´re the greatest and you paused turning around putting your arm in the direction I was sitting with thousands of fans and said "I love you too" everyone around me went wild. May 7,2016 you signed another jersey for me at victory field in Indianapolis IN. I may have just been another fan out of so many but we will always be second to none in my book. 2 years ago I got a tattoo in your honor. Thank you for all the memories since 1982. We went to Wrigley often as my grandparent lived in Wrigleyville. I wouldn´t trade childhoods with anyone. RIP Ryno you will truly be missed

Words cannot describe the amount of sorrow I have of Ryne's passing. For over 43 years, he was a part of my life in some capacity. I learned of his trade to the Cubs due to me following Ivan DeJesus when he was our SS. I'm so grateful to get the chance to meet him during spring training this year. It's a picture I'll cherish forever, along side the autograph I got on his last home game at Wrigley Field. No other sports star did I try to emulate more than Ryne, and the way he carried himself on and off the field. May he rest in peace and pain free. His death comes 8 months after losing my uncle to the same prostate cancer, so a double whammy for me the last year.

Ryne, was my hero/idol. I watched baseball games after school in Decatur, IL. It was a treat to actually get to see him in person playing at Wrigley Field and he would hit a homerun every time. Ryno drew fans like me to watch baseball on cable TV and at Wrigley Field in the 1980s and '90s by strongly wielding a Louisville Slugger K55 model bat, running the bases like there was an imminent deadline and catching nearly anything hit his way in the field. His courage during recent health battles was as inspirational as his play.

I am so very saddened at the passing of Ryne. My deepest condolences to his wife, children, grandchildren and entire family. My heart goes out to all of you.
I used to play softball and always had #10 as my uniform number because Ron Santo was always my favorite Cubs player until Ryne Sandberg came along! From then on, until I no longer played softball, I always had to have #23! I loved his style of play! Like I always played, he too, ALWAYS gave 110% EVERY SINGLE GAME! He did it, not for any special recognition, but because he TRULY loved the Cubs and loved baseball. The Cubs family (and baseball in general) lost a true baseball legend, a gifted athlete, a class act, sincere, genuine human being and a GREAT role model for any child or young athlete to follow! There will NEVER be another Ryne Sandberg!! I'm so glad they retired his number when they did! No Cubs player could EVER play as hard as he did to earn the right to wear that number ever again! I got out his book the night he passed away that he wrote back in the mid 1980's. I bought it when it first came out. As I looked through it and looked at all the pictures in the entire book, tears welled up in my eyes. I couldn't believe he was actually gone. WAY TOO SOON!
My mom was born and raised on the northwest side of Chicago and went to as many home games as she and her family possibly could growing up so I was born into a Cubs family and grew up a die hard Cubs fan and will die a a die hard Cubs fan. Ryne's birthday is the day before mine (different year) and the same day as my mom's. I watched the heartache of the '69 team and all the tough years before and after but I never gave up on them and always knew, or at least hoped, that SOMEDAY I would see them win a World Series! I kept believing that I'd see it eventually! I was so hopeful in 1984! So close! Ryne deserved a World Series win for the exceptional year he had that year!!
My 2 sisters and I were at the pennant winning game in 2016! Of course, we were all crying realizing we actually got to see them launch into the World Series! What a memory!! I hope to see it happen again before I die. Who knows, maybe Ryne Sandberg and Ron Santo will be Angels in the stands in seats #10 and #23 and somehow make that happen!! It's ironic that both of my favorite players' initials were RS!! Stands for REAL SUPERHEROES as athletes, human beings and role models in their lifetime!!
Again, my deepest condolences! Cubs fans lost one of their best players EVER! We all enjoyed watching him play and will miss seeing him at Cubs events in the future but we know he'll be watching down on his beloved family and his beloved Cubs always!

RIP RYNO! We will NEVER forget you! #23 lives on FOREVER in our hearts!

Ryne Sandberg did something quietly no player has done. He brought families closer together, bonds between brothers and father and son became tighter. Daily ,like myself would discuss baseball with my father, topic was how did sandberg do. Rhino, you are the reason my father and I were close. You were, are and always will be a class act on and off the field. Can't say goodbye...but will say thank you for life time of memories.

My family and I were at Ryne's first game as a Cub player...and his last game too. He was wonderful to my then 9 and 4 year old sons ( in 1982). He was always a shining star. Our prayers and sincere condolences to his family. He was a wonderful player and a great person too. Sincerely, Carol and Stan Paruch

I want to express my deepest sympathies to the Sandberg family for the loss of Ryne Sandberg, a kind, genuine person and elite baseball player. Ryne was a class act with a humble heart with even keel demeanor during good and bad times. I will never forget Ryne´s dramatic two home runs off Bruce Sutter to comeback and beat St. Louis in extra innings, because I had treated a large group of groomsmen and ushers from my wedding to the game. We witnessed an amazing comeback Cub´s win. The unfortunate thing is I am a die hard Cardinal fan but Ryne left my guests and crowd exuberant and celebratory. A game we will never forget, because of Ryne´s incredible ability to hit two consecutive home runs off the best reliever in baseball and ex-Cub to boot. We will miss his loving presence. May the Lord joyfully receive and reward Ryne in His kingdom and bring comfort and peace to your family.

My heart was broken when I heard Ryne had passed. He was my first childhood hero at age 10. I'm 53 now and he is still a part of me. RIP Ryno and my thoughts are with his family. You won't be forgotten!

One of my favorite players. He hit two homeruns against my Cardinals in September 1990. From that game on, I was a fan. Thanks for the memories, we´re going to miss you!!

This is me with Ryne Sandberg in the spring of 2017 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, IL when he made a surprise appearance when the Cubs World Series Championship trophy was in Springfield. I'll never forget that moment. This was the only time I met Ryne Sandberg in person. I wish I was able to meet him in person more often. #RIPRyno

To the Sandberg family and to all of the Cubs fans and baseball fans who admired Ryne Sandberg, my prayers and condolences are with you. Ryne Sandberg was truly Second to None. He was one of a kind. He was a special baseball player and even better human being.

God bless you Ryne Sandberg. May you rest in the eternal arms of Jesus Christ.

I´m sorry I never got to interact with you, but I know you would have treated me like you would have wanted to be treated if the situation was reversed. You were such a great role model not just for the Cubs but for humanity. Your accomplishments only include being the best second baseman in the history of baseball but being a really great human being. I have loved you since you first came to the Cubs. You will always be my go to 2nd baseman in my fantasy best team ever. I will always love your memory, you are and have been my hero and role model for so long. Rest in peace dear friend.

Thank you Ryno for all the wonderful memories you created with your amazing talent and professionalism. As a kid in Boston that loved baseball WGN was my ticket to watch you and the Cubs have an incredible 1984 season. You were the National League MVP and helped create Cubs fans all over the country. We now mourn your loss along with your family. I hope your passing motivates this Cubs team to honor your legacy by going all the way. Go Cubs. We love you Ryno.

My sincerest condolences to all off the Sandberg Family. Ryne was so much more than a baseball player. He touched so many lives along his path and each one was made a better person by having met him. He will remain a beacon of Inspiration for all around us. Heaven has gained a new Star in the Heavens today!
