Laurence Lougee Obituary

Laurence Wheeler Lougee Jr.

Durham, NH - Laurence Wheeler Lougee, Jr., age 76, formerly of New Hampton NH and St. Helena Island, SC, died peacefully at RiverWoods Durham (NH) on Wednesday, June 17, 2025, from complications of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). The son of Laurence Wheeler Lougee and Mary Taig Lougee, Larry was born October 26, 1948, in New York, NY and grew up in a widely travelled US Army family, settling in Winchester, MA for his last years of high school. He served four years on submarines with the US Navy prior to earning his B.S. at the University of Utah. His experimental first year of teaching turned into a lifelong career at the New Hampton School and Interlakes High School, Meredith NH, in administrative and teaching positions. Earning two master's degrees during his active career, he was a beloved teacher who believed in open minded listening to every side of an argument and rarely shared his own opinion with students, including whether he rooted for the Red Sox or the Yankees. Larry also loved his coaching responsibilities, having enjoyed team sports himself, and gave his time generously to his students and community, including years as a volunteer EMT. He braved countless trips with his students over the years including scuba instruction and dives in the Florida Keys and Hawaii. He was famous for taking his classes on annual trips to Boston on Patriots Day to see the reenactment of the Battle of Lexington and the Boston Marathon finish line, take in a Sox game, and walk the Freedom Trail. He treasured time at Yankee Point on Moosehead Lake with family and friends including a cast of faithful canine companions.

Larry is survived by his wife, Rebecca Moore Lougee, his son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy Lougee and Virgina Thompson Lougee and grandchildren Vera and Daniel Lougee, of Portsmouth NH, sisters Priscilla Rizzo (Jack Rizzo) and Ellen Simmons, and brother Richard Lougee (Carrie Lougee), and many nieces and nephews. Among his special friends were his caregivers at Friends of Caroline (SC), Riverwoods Durham (NH), and Brookhaven Hospice (NH). They loved how well he could appreciate and offer a good joke and a hearty laugh. We are indebted to them for their special attention.

Donations in Larry's memory may be made to CurePSP or New Hampshire Humane Society.

A private burial service will be held this summer at Pine Grove Cemetery, Farmington, NH.
