Richard Whitfield Obituary

Dr. Richard William Whitfield

South Strafford, VT - Richard "Dick" Whitfield, remembered for his vibrant and open-hearted spirit, died on June 7, 2023 at Hackensack Hospital in New Jersey following health challenges. Dick was born in Louisville Kentucky, youngest son of Marshall and Dorothy Whitfield. The family moved to Garden City, New York where Dick was an avid learner and star football player. He loved gardening, beginning as a boy. His first year at Dartmouth College, Dick broke his leg skiing, and recovering at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, fell in love with physical therapist, Pamela Babcock. Graduating from Dartmouth College in 1962, Pam and Dick were married in June, 1963, embarking on a Maine wilderness honeymoon by bicycle and canoe. Dick returned to Dartmouth for a Masters Degree and then earned a Doctorate of Engineering from Thayer School. Inventor and entrepreneur, Dick founded his thermal spray business, Whitco, selling torches but his true love was growing flowers and vegetables.

Children, Pamela Telos and Richard Tor, were born in Hanover, NH in 1965 and 1968. The family moved to Rowayton, Connecticut and then to Issaquah, Washington. They moved back to Hanover, NH in 1979, and Pam and Dick to South Strafford, VT ten years later.

Dick is survived by his children, his brother-in-law Colonel Howard Whitfield and family of California, and family and friends across the country. He encouraged everyone to follow their hearts and do what they love.
