Alan Ball Obituary

Alan R. Ball

Greenfield, MA - Alan R. Ball, 78, of Plantation Circle, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, surrounded by his family.

Alan was born in Northampton, MA, on April 1, 1947, to the late Robert F. and M. Pauline (Bernache) Ball.

He graduated from Northampton High School in the Class of 1965 and went on to earn his degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst as an engineer in the Class of 1969.

Alan proudly served in the United States Navy for six years during the Vietnam War, including three years aboard the USS Snook, a submarine. He was honorably discharged in September of 1974.

Following his military service, Alan built a successful career as a consulting engineer with Douglas, Peterson & Associates, where he worked for many years until his retirement.

Alan was a true gentleman who walked through this life with dignity and humility. All who knew him were impressed by his kind and generous spirit, as well as his wry sense of humor.

In his later years, Alan dedicated much of his time to giving back to the community. He volunteered extensively at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, where he committed many hours to supporting both patients and staff in the Emergency Room. He also served on the City of Greenfield's Licensing Committee, remaining actively involved up until very recently.

Alan was also a proud member of the Elks Club in Greenfield, where he volunteered with the Building Bridges group, helping to serve meals to local veterans. He was a longtime member of the Greenfield Country Club, where he spent many memorable hours on the golf course. A lifelong lover of sports, he was also a former tennis enthusiast.

Above all, Alan cherished the time he spent with his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of twenty-five years, Jean (Brown) Ball; his sons, Scott Ball and Cody Ball; his daughter, Kerry Larabee; his granddaughters, Jordan and Paige Bernier; and his brother Loren Ball. He is also survived by his former wives, Sandy Duprey and Jean Simmons.

Funeral services will be held Saturday 8/16 at 10:15am from the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal Street, Greenfield followed by a Memorial Mass at 11am at Holy Trinity Church, 133 Main Street, Greenfield. Burial will follow at Springdale Cemetery in Turners Falls.

Calling hours will be held Friday evening from 4-6pm at the funeral home.
