Guy Manning Obituary

Guy Hal Manning, age 90, of Arlington, Va passed away after a short illness. He was born on November 3, 1934, in Memphis, Tennessee, the son of the late Guy and Bertha Manning. A graduate of the University of Tennessee, Guy earned his degree in engineering. He began his career in Oak Ridge, Tennessee in the 1950s and later worked at Cape Canaveral, Florida on the Mercury missile project. His career and adventurous spirit took him around the world, working and living in many countries. In February 1968, during the North Vietnamese attack on Hu he survived and showed great courage by helping evacuate a Japanese diplomat and his family to safety by helicopter. Guy often reminisced about his childhood in Memphis, where his father served as a fireman during the Great Depression. One of his earliest memories was being tasked, at just five or six years old, with guarding his mother's pecan trees by keeping squirrels away with his BB gun. These stories reflected the resilience, humor, and resourcefulness that marked his entire life. Guy was a man of strong passions, with a lifelong love of fireworks, history, genealogy, and firearms. He was a proud member of the District of Columbia Sons of the American Revolution and cherished his heritage. He was preceded in death by his brother, Phil Edwin Manning, who passed in March 2017. Guy is survived by: His wife Nancy; One brother, Larry Owen Manning (Marilee) of Naples, Florida; Three children: Gary Lee Manning, Linnea Elizabeth Niclas, and Jeanne Denise (Richard) Coyne; Two grandchildren: Alicia Marie (Edward) Torres and David Allen (Emilee) Coyne, Two great-grandchildren, Elijah Allen Torres and Adeline Marie Coyne. He will be remembered as a man of adventure, resilience, and courage, and will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.
