Bailey Jackson Obituary

Bailey W. Jackson

South Hadley, MA - Bailey W. Jackson accomplished a great deal in his life but the accomplishments of which he was most proud were his work in social justice as a faculty member and later dean of the School of Education at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst from 1991 to 2002; and above all, the privilege of raising his wonderful children, Marc Jackson (deceased), Glenn Jackson, Amber Jackson Terranova, and Maya Jackson Pellegrini. He is survived by his wife, Lenore Reilly, his beloved stepchildren Ashley, Caroline, and William Carlisle, along with twenty-six grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A champion of diversity and education reform as well an influential theorist in the areas of racial identity development and multicultural organizational development, he spoke widely on topics of social oppression and diversity and was valued for a warm and engaging style that won the admiration of decades of students and colleagues who join us in mourning him. He was a member of many educational associations, including The American Association for Higher Education the Association for Teacher Educators, the American Society for Training and Development and served on the Board of Directors for the National Training Laboratories Institute to address workplace inequity.

He was born on March 17, 1944 in Columbus, Ohio to Bailey W. Jackson II and Theodora Manning Jackson, and was the oldest brother of Glenn and Karen Jackson (deceased). Bailey died with his family by his side on a fittingly beautiful fall day that recalled cherished times on Block Island. As our granddaughter pointed out, "he was eight-one and a half, not just eighty-one."

Calling hours will be held on November 21, 2025 from 4:00-7:00pm at the Beers & Story South Hadley Funeral Home.

When we were in our teens back in Jamaica, Queens, New York, he had the most inimical laugh.

Bailey was my best friend back in 1957 to 1960. His mother, Thea, was like a 2nd mother to me. His whole family treated me as one of their own.We both lived in Jamaica, Queens, back then. He was a very considerate person. We took different paths in our lives. His was the most fruitful.

I have known Bailey for the last 20 years. An excellent professor, a very kind man and above all a great human being. Bailey was a pillar of social justice not only at UMass but was known nationally. I am proud of what I learned from Bailey over the years and I miss him already.

Bailey was my professor, consulting colleague, and a friend. Bailey's Black Identity Development theory was instrumental in my dissertation research on Asian American Identity Development Theory in 1981, and I was lucky to have him serve as the Chair of my dissertation committee. Bailey also offered me a great opportunity to work with him and Rita at the New Perspectives Consulting Group, which opened new doors to work parttime in organizational development consulting in addition to my fulltime work as a university administrator. Bailey and his family have been my close friends for many years. I will forever be grateful for his mentorship, kindness, humor, wisdom, and professional support. Rest in peace Bailey!

Dr. Baley Jackson was a great leader in the School of Education, and his contributions to the field of social justice education will have a lasting impact. He was kind and supportive, inspiring graduate students to believe that anything was possible in their future careers, even for those balancing full-time work, family, and evening classes. His leadership and dedication to social justice education helped pave the way for a brighter and more equitable future for all students

I was both a student and staff member at the School of Ed during the time Bailey was teaching and then became Dean. He was one of my absolute favorite professors. He was a kind, patient, generous human being. I loved just having him be present in the building when I worked there. And his social justice work was so important. I send my love and prayers to his family.

Sending condolences to Professor Jackson's family at this difficult time. I took a few classes of his back in the 80's. It was clear he loved teaching, he had such a warm, loud and loving laugh. He was so
easy to approach and as I was an adult learner he seemed to give me and other students grace. I will remember him fondly always. I am so sorry for your loss.

Bailey was my colleague and dean. I always found him consistent, thoughtful, and with a clear vision. Above all, he was a decent human being and a serious leader - a combination that few have.

Bailey Jackson was an exceptional man. He played an essential role in my educational and professional development. Bailey´s commitment to social justice was a major influence and is reflected in my doctoral theses and in my professional life. He was always direct and persuasive but never overbearing. I think about him frequently. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.
