Gregory Thompson Obituary

Gregory Paul Thompson

Northampton, MA - Gregory Paul Thompson "Mr. Clean" of Northampton, passed away on Dec 22, 2025, aged 82. Born on Nov 10, 1943, in Norwood, he lived a full, unconventional, and greatly loved life.

Greg moved to The Valley in 1967, a freshman at UMass majoring in English.

In 1970, Greg was a founding member of the Ball Farm commune in Montague. Those years shaped his lifelong belief in community, and feeding anyone who walked through the door.

Greg was a small business owner and chef, best known for his Real Clean Power Wash business. For decades, locals saw the familiar sight of him driving his station wagon, wash trailer in tow, restoring homes, decks, and awnings. Greg ran local kitchens, including Quicksilver in Amherst and Calvin's in Greenfield. He first learned to cook from his mother. He honed his craft serving in the National Guard emphasizing quality, and generous portions.

Greg was also a talented plumber and electrician, able to repair, wire, and build nearly anything.

Greg's greatest pride and love was his only daughter, Sarah. When she bravely battled cancer, he declared with signature Thompson stubbornness and devotion, "You are not allowed to die before me."

Greg was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 1999, and for nine years, he lived at High View in Leeds, until closing in 2024. He moved to Webster Manor in Webster, where he was cared for to his final day. His family has profound gratitude for his caregivers.

Greg is survived by:

His daughter Sarah Thompson (James Dolan) of Amherst.

His grandchildren: Sean Ashburn, Somerville; Lia Ashburn, New Haven, CT; and Jordyn Thompson-Dolan, Amherst.

His former wife Connie Kruger (Susan Tracy), Amherst.

His older brother Richard Thompson (Charlotte), Kingston.

He was predeceased by his parents Frank and Hazel Thompson, and his eldest brother Frank Jr.

I first met Greg when my older sister, Connie, began dating him at UMass. I was nine years old and impressionable. Greg was sweet, putting up with the antics of my siblings and me, and very cute. I was too young to understand relationships, but was thrilled a couple of years later when he married into our family, becoming my first brother-in-law. My heart now goes out to Connie and to my niece, Sarah.
