Joseph Peters Obituary

Joseph F. Peters

Ashford, CT - Joseph F. Peters, 79, of Ashford, CT, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 30, 2025. He was born in Northampton, MA, son of the late Francis and Mary (Stebbins) Peters. Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Marsha (Borowski) Peters, after they had been next-door neighbors growing up.

Joe graduated from St. Michael's High School in Northampton, where he excelled at soccer and baseball. Upon college graduation, he spent his entire professional career teaching English at Windham Regional Vocational Technical High School in Willimantic, CT. At Windham Tech he established the boys' soccer program and also coached baseball, girls' basketball and softball. Joe also coached countless other sports teams on which his own children played.

Joe was an avid reader and an accomplished nature photographer. He was also an adventurous traveler, with favorite destinations including Africa, Russia and Alaska. Joe's most treasured times, however, were the 40 summers spent on Woodbury Pond in Maine. There he held the annual family fishing competition for the largest bass caught and enjoyed gatherings with his extended "Maine Family".

Joe loved nature, especially birdwatching and butterflies, tagging monarchs. He had an affinity for the bluebirds he tended in their bluebird houses, as well as the variety of birds he fed throughout the year.

Joe served as the Chairman of the Ashford Board of Education for 12 years, then as a member of the Region 19 Board of Education. He was also a member of the Ashford Democratic Town Committee, and most recently served on the Ashford Board of Assessment Appeals.

Joe is also survived by his son, Daniel Peters; daughter, Sarah Peters; two cherished grandchildren, Jonathan and Alexa, along with their mother, Kristie Faszcza; his brother, Jack Peters; sister-in-law, Diane Borowski; brother-in-law, Edward Borowski and his wife Cida; sister-in-law, Eva Peters; nephew, David Linscott; niece, Deborah Linscott; and great niece, Aurora Meehan. He was predeceased by his brother, James Peters.

A calling hour will be held on Friday, January 16, 2026 from 12:00-1:00 PM at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 64 Pompey Hollow Rd., Ashford, CT, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 PM. Memorial donations may be made to the Ashford Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 1, Ashford, CT 06278. Introvigne Funeral Home, Inc., Stafford Springs, CT, has care of the arrangements. I am very sorry to hear of Joe's passing. I am in Florida for the winter and missed his service. I taught with Joe at Windham Tech School for more than 27 years. We always had a very cordial relationship.
I remember him for his smile and good nature and his rapport with the students.

I learned a lot about my cousin Joey reading his obituary. Our paths did not cross often in our adulthood, but what I do recall is how kind and attentive he was to me as a kid- his (much) younger cousin. I am not surprised that he was a teacher to young people. Our family visited their home on Coolidge Avenue often after church on Sundays, and I would enjoy the photo on the mantle of the three boys, Jimmy, Jackie and Joey. I am saddened by his passing, but happy to know that Joey had such a wonderful, productive life.
My deepest condolences to Marsha, Sarah, Daniel, grandchildren, and all who knew him well. Rest in peace, Cuz.

Jack,
My condolences. I so enjoyed your brother Joe´s company during my highschool years, especially our times on various Hampshire County baseball fields. Such a fine gentleman with only kind words for teammates and competitors alike.
I´ll forever have fond memories of Joe in his catcher´s gear hustling out to the pitcher´s mound to calm me down.

We will miss seeing Joe fishing on Woodbury Pond. We remember the many summers he and Marsha stayed on Rosser Drive. They enjoyed the company of their grandchildren each year. Joe not only taught Jonathan and Alexa to excel in fishing, but he and Marsha created countless memories for them both. We will greatly miss his big bear hugs and watching him navigate the fishing boat across the lake.
