Nancy Newbury-Andresen Obituary

Nancy Newbury-Andresen

Hanover, NH - Nancy A. Newbury-Andresen passed away on January 28, 2026 in Hanover, NH. Nancy was born on November 4, 1939 in Boston, MA to Anne C. Newbury and Egbert S. Newbury III. Nancy spent her childhood in Concord, MA with her three loving and adventurous brothers, David, Sam, and Bill. She attended Concord Academy and went on to study Art History at Mills College in Oakland, CA. Nancy was proud to be from Concord; she loved the history of the town and the values it instilled in her family. Nancy had a strong and enduring commitment to civic participation from a young age.

Nancy found her professional passion studying nursing at Columbia University. Living in New York in the late 1960s exposed her to new political perspectives, energy, and an awareness of the injustice that pervades our society. She spent a year serving in the Frontier Nursing Service in Kentucky, where she traveled on horseback to provide care to families. Nancy moved to the Upper Valley and began working in the Cardiology Department at Dartmouth Hitchcock. There, she met the love of her life, Dr. Donald Andresen. Their first interaction was a spirited discussion regarding a difference of opinion on whether nurses could read an electrocardiogram. They were married in Concord, MA in 1975. Together, they went on to start the cardiac intensive care unit at Dartmouth Hitchcock, a project to which they were both deeply committed.

Nancy and Don shared a love of the outdoors; they hiked the Long Trail, canoed along the Connecticut River, and cross-country skied on trails across Vermont and New Hampshire. They both loved caring for their rambunctious, loyal dogs, KC and Caddie. Nancy loved the thrill of alpine skiing as a young woman. Nancy cherished the Upper Valley, finding peace in its quiet beauty, and fellowship in its sense of community. Nancy was passionate about progressive political causes: women's rights, abortion rights, poverty alleviation, racial justice, and respect for the environment were values that guided her life. Nancy adored the winter months in Norwich. She loved shoveling snow, bringing wood in; any chore that needed to be done when temperatures were below freezing gave Nancy an uncommon amount of joy. Nancy was a devoted, lifelong member of Vermont Public Radio.

Nancy's laugh was infectious. She always had a twinkle in her eye when she smiled. She loved learning about the world. She loved her family. She cared about her community. She was a loving, strong, caring, and adventurous daughter, sister, wife, mom, and friend.

Nancy is survived by her daughter Caroline Andresen and son-in-law Brian Austin; brother David Newbury and wife Catharine Newbury; sisters-in-law, Priscilla Newbury and Jan Myers-Newbury; stepdaughter Karen Andresen and husband David Williams; stepson Christian Andresen and wife Dot Helling; cousin Gilbert Roddy and wife Sue Roddy; nieces Elizabeth Newbury and wife Aija Simpson, Susanna Newbury and husband Eric Gingerich, Sophie Berglund and husband Ted Berglund, and Cordelia Newbury and wife Hannah Reagan; nephew David Newbury; and step-grandchildren Kyle Anderson-Andresen, Colby Anderson-Andresen, Larissa Williams, and Talia Williams. Nancy is predeceased by her husband Don Andresen, her brothers Sam and Bill Newbury, parents Anne and Bert Newbury, and her daughter-in-law Donna Anderson.

A memorial service to honor Nancy will be held at the Norwich Congregational Church at 11AM on February 14. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
