Howard Southworth Sr.

Woodsville, NH - Howard E. Southworth Sr., 93, died Friday, March 6, 2026, at the Grafton County Nursing Home.

He was born in West Fairlee, VT, on April 6, 1932, to Dewitt and Violet (Sumner) Southworth. He attended West Fairlee schools and began working in local mines after the 8th grade. Howard worked in construction and as a logger for himself and various local companies throughout his life.

An avid outdoorsman, Howard enjoyed hunting, fishing, and raising horses. He was a frequent competitor at the North Haverhill, Bradford, and Fryeburg fairs, where he pulled horses and oxen.

He was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, Roy, Jay, and Richard Southworth; a sister, Mary Clark; and his long-term partner, Kay Griggs. He is survived by his children Howard E. Southworth Jr. (Linda) of Pittsburg, NH; Gloria Melendy of Fairlee, VT; and Donna Hood (Scott) of Flagler, FL; a brother, Wayne Southworth of White River Jct., VT., as well as 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Private interment will be held in the spring at the Horse Meadow Cemetery Annex in North Haverhill.
