Cloquet Marine killed in Iraq

Associated Press

CLOQUET, Minn. - A 20-year-old Marine from Cloquet has become the seventh Minnesota serviceman to die in Iraq, his grandmother said Friday.

Levi Angell was killed earlier this week when his Humvee was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade, said Lila Angell, also of Cloquet.

The military would not comment on the report Friday. Angell was not listed on the official list of military casualties posted on the Web by the Department of Defense. Casualties are typically made public well after the family is notified.

Lila Angell said her grandson joined the Marines shortly after graduating from Cloquet High School in 2002.

Including Angell, three Marines from Minnesota have died in Iraq this week.

Lila Angell said her grandson came home for Christmas and ``just smiled from ear-to-ear.''

``He was so proud of what he was doing,'' she said.

She described him as a religious young man who ``just loved'' his church.

Funeral arrangements were pending.

Another Marine from northeastern Minnesota, Pfc. Moises Langhorst of Moose Lake, was killed this week. A Marine from Eden Prairie, Cpl. Tyler Fey, was killed by hostile fire last Sunday.

Fey was assigned to the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force out of Camp Pendleton, Calif. Langhorst was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, 1st Marine Division, also of the Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Pendleton.

Angell's rank and unit weren't immediately clear.

News of Angell's death came a year after Saddam Hussein's statue was toppled in a central Baghdad square, signaling his ouster. Yet recently Marines have been battling Sunni Muslims west of the capital and coalition forces are trying to put down a Shiite uprising across central and southern Iraq.

To the family of Lance CPL. Levi T. Angell:
As you may know, the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation has honored your loved one at its Memorial Day Sunday worship service (each year in May) … since the time of your fallen hero's ultimate sacrifice. We will continue to pay tribute to our nation's veterans … lest we ever forget!

Now we would like to honor you … as the next-of-kin … who have also paid a great price on the altar of liberty. On Sunday 29 September at 11:00 a.m. we will host a Gold Star Family Sunday.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship … as we pay tribute to your sacrifice. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain (Colonel-Retired) Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “By Dying, We Live.” The special music will be the husband/wife vocal/piano — Wickman Duo. Following the worship experience, your family is invited to attend a social time in our Fellowship Hall … with some light refreshments.

As this historic chapel has limited seating, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Respectfully,

I just found out about this Levi. It brings back a lot of good memories when we were waiting down in Kuwait prior to the long drive up there. Like Billy Condon said, it is tough to understand. You were with us the day and a half earlier to that sad and fateful day that you were taken from us, fighting for every inch to survive and make it out. After it all ended I remember you and me were chuckling when we noticed everybody was smoking to calm the nerves. I miss you buddy and that day is one I will never forget. I crack a beer every year for you. I am proud to have been able to know you and it was an honor to serve with you.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?

And also i know after you departed from us you were the (Angel)l watching over us all as we continued on........God Bless you and you Family Angell and rest in peace brother....Coporal Allen

i know this is for levi's family but im going to write this to levi. it's me lcpl condon from first platoon. its hard thinking back to that day. if people only knew what had happened a day and a half before that then maybe they might be able to understand what im feeling. even after three years im still so confused and upset at what happened. i spent all of 2004 in iraq trying to figure it out and the more i thought about it the more upset i got. it just didnt seem fair to me. i was in longer, i was in iraq in 2003, i had seen combat before we were even in the same company together. sometimes i ask god why not me instead of you. in the end that's exactly who we fight for, eachother and i know if it was me you might just be saying the same thing. we, your comrades gave everything but you my brother you gave all. i am honord to have served with you. semper fi my brother and guard heavens gates until we meet again.

Levi: Today is your three years already. I keep avoiding Snelling and this book...I still have problems facing the fact that you are gone. I miss you all the time...that time at the lake with Janice and the bikini incident...I still have the photos, and they still make me laugh. Our songs and memories are alive always. There is simply no one like you. I wish I could have had more time with you...You made such an impact on my life in such a short few years. Hey, by the way, I finally quit smoking...you always had more faith in me than I had in myself. Thanks for that, and always caring about me, without our friends...that meant the world to me at the time. I miss you Levi...take care good buddy!

To the family of Lance Cpl. Levi T. Angell:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 27 May, 2007. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “Remembering” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. I took some time today to read back through the entries over the past year and a half-the time that people spent all over the nation to say a couple words here and there...Whether or not they know Levi. It just amazes me where we stand as a country in the months since he has joined the Almighty. I don't know if it will ever hit that he is gone-We all said our goodbyes and we all mourned him and celebrated his life, and will continue to do so for the rest of ours...But I still can't comprehend that his short yet very sweet and fulfilled life has moved on. Levi~ our love is lost and lost are we without you.

Levi

I can't tell you how much I miss you. It was hard to let you go when you left for Camp Pendelton in Sept. But the hardest part is knowing you aren't coming home. I am so proud of you. I told your mom and dad "thank you" for raising the son that had helped me in high school through so much. Even just to be yourself. I wish you wouldn't have been taken from us so soon...There are so many more things we could have done, but I guess if God had his plan for you, he made it so that you lived the life so many of us had wished we could have done. I miss you Levi. I know you were dancing with me and Tiffany when they played the DWD2G at the wake, because I could see your smile. I love you Levi, I wish I would have been able to hug you one more time and laugh with you one more time, and smile with you one more time and do so many things with you...Just one more time.

Wow this really didn't happen. It didn't really hit me until roll call during the funeral. Levi always took care of his friends. You were one lucky person to be Levi's friend. He would go to the end of the world to help people. I will never forget his smile and the fact that he would do anything to make me laugh. I first met Levi working at Dairy Queen, and when I would work with him I knew it was going to be a good day at work. Levi it is to hard to say goodbye to you so I will just say see you soon. I love and miss you

Wow... i have been trying to put off signing this for so long ~ as if all of a sudden you would come back and i wouldn't have to be doing this... i shouldn't be doing this.. not for you.. not now. You know levi- i remeber when i first time I met you. It was durring track... you were quite a bit bigger than me, you threw shot put, and to top it off you had a mullet... all i can say is boy was i intimidated! But then i looked again, and i saw your smile, and i knew i had nothing to be afraid of. It is a smile i will never forget. I just want to thank you not only for being in my life and leaving such an impact on me, but also for letting me be a part of your life. I have so many memories with you that i will cherish forever. Cliffin in the summer, sneaking into black bear and going hot tubbing every other day, four wheeling-that was scary!- and hanging out at ty's uncles house. You would do anything to brighten my day.. and we all knew how crabby i was back then ~ right ty? From singing songs, to trying to persuade me for a half hour to punch you square in the face because i had boxing gloves on... and was extremely crabby.. you knew hitting something would make me feel better ~ so you volounteered your own body. You always put others before yourself and i will never forget that about you. We all miss you so much! I guess all i can be now is grateful. Grateful for all of the good times and memories i will never forget. Grateful that there are people like you in this crazy world to give the rest of us hope. I am so proud of you! And Grateful that now you are safe up in heaven where i know you will be watching over all of us.

Now you know you were there when this started ... and so the last thing i want to say to you, that i know will put that big goofy smile on your face, is this....

"HIGH FIVE FOR JESUS!!!"

I love you man
