Hey, you don't know me, and I don't know you very well either. But I've heard so much about you from your daughter, they are a such a sweet and kind person, and I know that you would be proud of them no matter what. I hope one day to visit your grave, as I wish to honor the man who's daughter looks up to him so much. You will always be in my memory. And to Mackenzie, I know you like to visit here every now and then, just know that you are amazing and strong, and I may not be able to spend time with you for now, but just know that I'm waiting everyday to see you again, I'm excited to see what adventures we will have, and I hope that you can figure out who this is because I'm making it pretty obvious

Another Memorial Day...and still so many thoughts of you and your family. I still see your young smiling face as you left...I remember the joy in your voice as you spoke of your wife and the new life that the two of you had created. It is said that time heals all wounds...but I still cry tears and my heart still sinks when I think of the moment when I heard you had left this earth. To your wife and daughter, please know that Matthew was a great friend to many and his memory lives on ...his sacrifice will never be forgotten. He lived only a few years but made a big impact that will last forever.

On this memorial day I am remembering Matthew. I often think of him and his family. I only met his wife on the day of his memorial but pray for her and his child often. I am thankful to see the picture of her on this site. He was a nice young man and always smiling and talking about his new wife. Each time I eat a Whataburger I think of him because out last conversation was him heading home and he told me he would eat a whataburger for me when he got there. RIP my fellow Texan...we still remember and honor you. Love and prayers to his family.

My name is Thomas Schiller. Matt was my bunk mate in boot camp. I have just recently found out that he has passed away and it has taken a huge toll on me. He is an amazing marine and friend. I had a very difficult time in boot camp and he made it easier for me. I love you Matt and you will be in my heart forever and ever. You will never be forgotten. Thank you for showing me what a true friend is all about.

I think of Matthew and his family so very often. My son, John T. Popowich was injured in the explosion that took Matthew's precious life. They were in the vehicle together throughout their time in Iraq. It is only now that I have been able to write this. My son spoke of Matthew so very often and of his devoted faith. He was an inspiration to John each and every day. God bless each and every one of you the Matula family.

So long and yet it seems like yesterday. These 2/1 Marines and their loved ones from that deployment 5 years ago have been in my mind all month and particularly over Labor Day weekend. It was a trip back in time to my hometown, complete with fair and patriotic rodeo grand entry with a tribute to those who served. New to me was the sold out concert the night before, and everyone was talking about how the entertainer had sung a patriotic theme and then brought a group of Marines in dress blues up on stage to receive a large toys for tots contribution. The crowd gave the Marines a standing ovation and wouldn’t sit down. It was a good feeling to know that across the country similar celebrations of gratitude were happening. And despite the thrill of dress blues, we all know it’s the hot sweaty dirty guys out in the grit and sand in digital camos and desert boots that we are cheering for.
Then I came home and opened the e-mail forward with the u-tube video showing the signal motion for gratitude to our service men and women; hand over heart down to open hand, so natural and unobtrusive. Bless who ever came up with it.
So we remember these sons and their families and friends with gratitude and honor once again.
May God Bless You All, heart to hand.

Thanks to all that have written in rememberance and honor of our son Matthew. He was a fine young man and a wonderful son. We miss him greatly. His daughter will be 5 in Aug., she has truly been a blessing as well as her mother. I know that Matthew would of been very proud of them both. I plan on making a printed quest book in the near future to be able to give his daughter when she gets older. That way she will be able to see how many people lives her dad has touch. Thanks again to each and everyone of you for all your thoughts and prayers and your kind words.

Matula was one of my young Marines in 2/1 comm platoon. He was a great Marine, a little hard headed at times but for good reasons. He was a leader all the way, and by no means a follower. He learned his job quick and was sent to Golf Co. Where he only exceled in his knowledge and performance. He was a great Marine to know and work along side with. There is not a day that goes by that I do not think about him. I have memorialized him by honoring him on my myspace page and with memorial tattoo on my left leg. To his wife and daugther that I never had the pleasure to meet, Matt was a great Marine and a great friend and it was an HONOR to know him.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

The last time I saw Matt was on the beach in Louisiana at my uncles house before the hurricane. He was standing on the beach with a huge fishing rod in his hand, and a smile on his face just as big. That memory is one of the memories that I have which will never fade. I think about you Matt all the time. You helped me get through deployment onboard the USS Ronald Reagan, and that memory of us fishing down in Louisiana brought me back. Matt you did alot for me. you did alot for everyone. I just hope I am doing a good job paying back you, your family, and our country for all that was given to me. I hope I make you proud.

Matula Family,

I just want ya'll to know that Matt was such a wonderful person and a good friend. We had lots of fun together in school. I remember when he was on leave around christmas time with his new wife Julie and i was so busy i didnt get a chance to say hi.. I figured I would see him come home soon , so I will talk to him then. Then i read in the newspaper that he was killed in Iraq, i felt so bad that i had to atleast say goodbye.. and that was one of the hardest things to do is to say Good-bye to a friend. We all miss him so much and wish you all the best, he will always be in my heart.

The most meaningful words ever written for the saddest of all occasions was by possibly the most compassionate leader this country has ever known. He wrote:

"I pray that our heavenly father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement and leave you only with the cherished memory of the loved and lost and the solumn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice at the altar of freedom." - Abraham Lincoln

We share your loss.

What can a parent say but that "I can't imagine your loss." What can a parent say but, "Thank you Matt for your service for the future of America's children. They are now YOUR children." What can an American say, but, "Thank YOU for your service and sacrifice to my country."

I did not know Matt, except through the small group of us that got together to send care packages over to the troops. Being the "son of a Marine", it seemed the very least us a home could do. Leon Komkov told me of Matt's and his dad's visit to say thanks. . . It was nice to know that "us at home" could do something.

I'm a big believer in Heaven. It seems that God manages to take most of the brave and fun people. I know quite a few of both of those types who have now embraced Matt.

My family and I just want you to know that Matt and ALL of his family are in our prayers EVERY night. May God bless you in your grief and bring you peace. And please know in your hearts how grateful we are to Matt, to each of his family, and to every service member and their families for what they have done, and do, daily.

Matt,Toni,Anthony & Julie,

I want to say how proud I am to know this family, who raised such a fine young man. I'm only sorry that I did'nt get to meet Matthew last summer when he was here. I'm so saddened by your loss, my heart goes out to each family member, and friends who will feel this "emptiness" caused by Matthew's death forever ! I know from experience how hard this is right now, and just KNOW that your strong Christian Faith will help you get through this troubling, heartbreaking grief.

Julie,

God bless you, keep you strong as you bring your baby girl into the world. Love her enough for the both of you and, keep the "spirit", personality, and knowledge of her Daddy Matthew and his family alive for her to know for all time. Her Daddy made the ultimate sacrifice to help make a more peaceful, better life and world for all us, including the peoples of Iraq.

Always a friend,

Your family is in my thoughts and prayers as you grieve the loss of Matthew. I met Matt a few months ago when he visited our office in Austin. He was a very fine young man. We were so happy to be able to tell him in person how much we appreciated his service. Now, I just want to say thank you to Matt for his service and his sacrifice, and to let the family know my thoughts are with you.

My prayers are with your family, and my heartfelt thanks go out to Matt for his service and his sacrifice. I had the privilege of meeting Matt last fall, when he and his Dad drove into Austin to deliver a plaque from his Marine company. I told him then, and I reaffirm to all his family now, that our appreciation for his service and sacrifice are boundless.

Matt touched my life and the lives of my friends who worked in a small way to support the work of him and his comrades.

God bless you.

To The Family of Matthew Matula:

There are no words to express our grief at the loss of such a fine young man. I know that he will be sorely missed. Although, I never met Mr. Matula, he touched our hearts greatly. An attorney from our building sent a care package to Mr. Matula's company in Iraq to help them cope with the horrific circumstances that they entered into through no fault of their own. He had the graciousness and appreciation of this gift to make and bring a plaque to the office here in Austin thanking us for the gift. Not very many young men these days would take the time to call much less go the extra effort to complete such a gesture. This tells us what a fine person, husband, son and father he would have been. I was in the Marine Corps during the early 70's and never had to experience combat, and that is why we appreciate Mr. Matula's sacrifice so much. Please take to heart how much he will be missed and loved by all who knew him and those of us who never met him, but have heavy hearts because of his actions. I just happened to be out of the office that afternoon when he came by and I regret so much not being able to meet him and tell him thank you for everything that you have done for all of us. May God be with all of you.
