Back in 2005 I made a donation to herobracelets.org they were making bracelets for our fallen soldiers and donating the proceeds. When I got the bracelet I was given a random name. I received Greg's name. I never met Greg but somehow I feel he is always with me while I continually wear this bracelet with his name on it.

To the family of PFC Gregory R. Goodrich:
Please know that just as your loved one remains in your hearts and minds; his sacrifice, and that of your family, remains with the people he died defending. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for his bravery and selflessness, or the heartache we feel for your loss. God bless and keep you always.

I was watching a show on the military channel last night about about the 724th from Illinois during Iraqi Freedom, and caught Greg's name. That can't be the same Greg, I said. But I did some research on the internet and to my shock discovered that this was Greg, one of my best friends growing up in Warner Robins, GA. To his family, my deepest sympathy. Thank you for your son's service. To Greg, I hate we went our different paths in high school. I miss your friendship. I will always remember you...and your giant train table.

Dear family of Pfc. Gregory R. Goodrich,

We want to say thank you. We understand that no words can be adequate for your sorrow. We certainly do not want to intrude upon your privacy. As Americans we want you to know that we deeply appreciate the ultimate sacrifice your loved one has made for all of us. We also would like for you to be aware that with this letter comes our special concern and prayers for you. We are all safer because young men and women who love their country, and know the value of a free nation, are willing to put themselves in harms way, and lay down their lives to keep this nation free and safe for all of us.
Your sacrifice is also very great. We know that we can give little comfort; however, the knowledge that your loved one did not die in vain, but died in the service of our country, gives each of us a noble example of the value of life, and the responsibility of freedom. We hope this will bring pride and comfort to you.
We at Gethsemane Church believe that there is purpose to life. We send this letter with our deepest appreciation for the greatest of sacrifices, you and your loved one have given to this country. We know it is not enough, but please allow us to assure you that your loved one is not forgotten.

Very Sincerely

Frank G. Noyes

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

It is with extreme grief that I came upon the death of a very close friend of mine who holds a most dear place in my heart. The last time I heard from him, he was passing through (as always) and left a copy of the Dalai Lama's book of compassionate living at my doorstep... he was in his truck and passing through.... I have so many stories/letters to share. I am just devastated two and a half years after the fact. This is awful to learn via the internet... but if I hadn't had the book, I wouldn't have known to "google" his name when a student borrowed it and I wanted to know his whereabouts....

To Greg Goodrich's family and friends, one only has to read the entries in this guest book, to know how very dear Greg was to everyone who he shared life with. Greg and my daughter, Regina, were friends and she has only recently learned of Greg's death and she is very upset that years went by without the knowledge of his death.
We appreciate the friendship Greg and Regina shared, but most importantly we appreciate Greg giving his life for our freedom. May our lives be worthy of the giving of Greg's life.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Le Ron A. Wilson (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

I met Greg through my brother Chad Kelly and Terry House during their first year at the University of Georgia. He was such an easygoing and carefree guy. I remember the year I moved to Athens to start school he was recuperating from a bad motorcycle accident, but that didn't dampen his spirit! Greg always had a smile on his face, I just can't recall a day when he didn't. I'm a better man for having met Goodrich(that's what we called him, still do)! God Bless.

I am So Deeply Sorry for your loss.

It has been several years now that Greg gave his life for our country and way of life. I met Greg at Middle Georgia College and later we were room mates at UGA. I simply can not put into words the heavy heart that I have when I think of his sacrifice. Ron, your son was full of courage and love. My wife Tammy and I own a small motel in Harper Kansas. Recently we had a local man die in Iraq, Sgt. Wilsun Mock. In Gregs memory we let any of the Patriot Guard stay at no cost. Anthony, Ks is located seven miles south of us and they have built a 911 Memorial with several beams from the WTC. A walk way of bricks lead throuhg a park and to the memorail which have two large lights that shoot straight up into the sky. We have purchaced a memoral brick with Gregs name on it and had it placed in the walk way. I am so very sorry for your loss. I have a son of my own and I let him know that he will have a free future because of the sacrifices of Greg and men like him. This world would be a lot beter place if we could all have the qualities that Greg had.

I remember in 1991 that America was on their knees in prayer in behalf of the American soldier until their soldier came home. Some of us are still waiting to see our soldier come home. We can only go to them now and one day we will. God Bless Ameria.

My wife and I's only son Greg will surely be missed. He did his 'own thing'and was very independent. But he became our hero defending his fellow soldiers as depicted in the book "Escape in Iraq" publihed in 2004.An English Lit. major he never got to write a book but he became a part of military history in the aforementioned book! Dad. PS: thanks Sherrie for all your eloquent tributes...
