I hadn't looked at this website for a while and noticed several newer entries. Please accept the gratitude of the Stern Family for your acknowledgements and anecdotes. We miss Andy every day and take some solace knowing that he has not been forgotten. Thank you...Rich Stern (Dad).

P.S. Andy "lives on" in many ways. The most profound for me are the nine young men and women whose names are (partial) tributes to him. Among them are three of our grandchildren whose middle names are lasting tributes. Too, we are grateful to the many folks who visit Andy at Arlington National Cemetery (Gravesite 60-7999 in Section 60). Andy is at rest there with thousands of heroes, many in Section 60 who fought for our Nation in Iraq and Afghanistan. They, too, are not and will not be forgotten.

Thinking about Andy today (as I do often). Rich & Eileen, I know Andy has given you signs in the past and something compelled me to write in this guest book today (instead of just going about my day). I'm so grateful I met your son and for the time we got to spend together. His determination has inspired me throughout my life and I do my best to live life to its fullest. Semper Fi.

Dear Senora Stern, you were my Spanish teacher in high school. You told me what happened to your son and you always wore a band on your arm marking the dates of his life. I never met him. Its been 10 years since I had you as a teacher, but every 9/16 I think about you, your son, and family. I come from a military family myself and know one of the greatest fears after losing someone is that everyone will forget. I haven't seen you in 10 years, but I remember Andy every Sept 16. I will never forget him or you. Blessings to you and your family

Andrew, I did not know you personally, but do know you through your mother. I know how proud you are of her. I teach with your mother and not only is she one of the best high school Spanish Teachers in the U.S., but she is a wonderful example to our students of what a wife, mother and teacher truly means. I thank her for being your mom and thank you for giving the U.S. the ultimate gift. May your and your mother's example of what life should and can be continue to shine bright.

To the family of 1Lt. Stern,
I did not know 1Lt. Stern personally, but I was with him the day he passed. His tank patrol was pulling security for us while we were building a bypass road for Fallujah. I sustained injuries in the same blast that took his life. I believe that his actions helped to save my life and the lives of many others that were present that day. My condolences to the family and friends of 1Lt. Stern's.

Dear Stern Family,
My husband attended The Basic School with Andy in 2003. He though very highly of Andy. He took Andy's death very hard. We lost another friend named Andy around the same time as your Andy's death. When our son was born in 2005 we named him Andrew to honor your son, Andrew Stern, and our other friend Andrew Bruno.

Recently one of my friends lost their child. My friend told me she was worried that her child would be forgotten. I felt compelled to tell you that your son is not forgotten. We are reminded of him often.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I worked at Copper Cellar in Knoxville with Andy while we both attended college. Andy became everyone's favorite server in the restaurant almost as soon as he started. One of the best memories I have of Andy was talking him into being the "hot" server at my bachelorette party we had at the Cellar. He was so proud of being a marine and serving our country. He will forever be missed by those who were fortunate enough to have known him, even if only for a moment.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Stern,
My name is John Lewis. I am a 3rd classman at Culver Military Academy and a 2nd year rower on the Culver Crew Team. Today at the Academies we remembered your son, with the rowing of the crew boat named in his honor, and celebrated his life the in the beauty of life procession. I was on the Culver Color Gaurd, in the position of left rifle, gaurding your sons golden star on the legion flag to my right. I would like to tell you that I wouldn't have wanted to stand anywhere else on this Saturday the 15th of September 2007, then right next to the star that honors your son. And even though I or any of the current crew members never knew your son in person and weren't even in his generation, every student who has rowed in his boat, feels as if we have rowed with him ourselves. Your son's presence watches over Culver, your family, and our country always. I am sorry for your loss.

Sincerly,

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

I rowed with Andy for 2 years and then took over coaching after he left for Iraq. Not a day goes by that I don't look at the bracelet we had made in his honor that I wear always on my right wrist. I am still coaching a crew up here in Baltimore and I still abide by your son's ever enduring method of motivating....yelling...loudly. He was the most motivational person I have ever met and I will never forget the lessons he taught us both on and off the water. If anyone else is interested in getting one of the bracelets please email me and I'll let you know where I got mine and what it says.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

Hello,

I am a former Sgt in the Marine Corps, and serving with Marines like 1st Lt. Stern makes me proud to have been a Marine. While stationed at Fort Knox Ky., I had the honor of meeting (at the time) 2nd Lt. Stern. While at Fort Knox, I assisted officers while they attended Armor Officer Basic instruction. I can honestly say that of all the officers I worked with 1st Lt. Stern was one of the most professional. I have yet to recover from the shock of hearing of his death. I would like to extend my condolences to not only to the family of Lt. Stern, but to all those who knew his as he was a great person, and a great Marine.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Stern,

Your son is the reason I became a rowing coach. He was the inspiration to myself and so many others on that team. He coached me for 2 years then left for training and I took over the novice men. I saw him at OCS and I know he was an an inspiration there as well. I know he was an inspiration to those troops in the field. He lived the life he wanted on his own terms and wouldn't have it any other way. If there were more people like him around this country and this world would be better off. I know I am a better person for getting to know him and I thank God every day for putting someone like him in my life. He taught me how to be a leader and how to lead a team to success. His influence on others will never be forgotten and the Rowing Team at UT will never be the same. They will race his namesake boat with pride and always remember it was Andy that taught us to race harder and faster....always.

Eileen my heart is with you and your family. I remember you and your boys travelling with George and I to deliver Christmas gifts in Chicago. Was Andrew in the group that day? Words are so feeble at these moments, but know that you are all in my prayers.

Some students come into our lives and we never forget them. I remember that Andy sat in Row 5 in the last seat by the window. Why do I remember that...... because of his enchanting smile and his energetic personality! He daily gave me that smile upon leaving the room. Thank you Andy for serving our country. May you rest in peace!

Dear Richard,Eileen, Justin, Kyle and Zach:

Sandi and I were deeply saddened by the news of your loss. We think back on the days when our sons were playing sports and attending Longfellow and Cooper schools together. It was just a couple of years ago that we saw you at Portillo's restaurant in Ridge Plaza.

I am offering a moment of silence at the Arlington Heights Village Board meeting tonight for Andy. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to all of you and your family.

Dear Stern Family,

I am saddened to hear of Andy's death. While it has been over 10 years since Barrington High School Spanish class, Sra. Stern, I remember vividly hearing your stories of Andy and his brothers and seeing your face light up as you spoke. Andy no doubt was a great man; he served his country well and we are all proud. May God continue to uphold you with His right hand, and give you peace and comfort at this time of great loss.

Rich,Eileen, Justin, Kyle and Zachary-

Each of us is searching for the "right" thing to say...and after struggling to come up with the words, we realize that there is nothing, nothing that can ever articulate our sadness, shock and grief over Andy's loss. And certainly,no words can describe the loss you are feeling. Please know, that even though the words may not be there, we are there for all of you. We are here to support you, to offer our love and affection, our ear, our shoulder...We cherish the memories of Andy and are incredibly proud of the wonderful man that he became.

With much love and with much sadness--

Kitty, Terry, Alyssa, Andy, David and Zach

Dear Stern family,

I was so sorry to learn about Andy's death. I remember him as a quick-witted, energetic, involved Cooper student who added laughter to our classroom discussions. I always felt Andy would be a successful, productive citizen, and I have no doubt that he probably lifted the spirits of his colleagues with his sense of humor whenever he could. I'm very saddened by his loss. Please know that my warm thoughts are with you all.

Sincerely,
