Cpl. Ian T. Zook

Ian Zook Obituary

PALM CITY — The last notes of taps still lingered as two U.S. Marines performed their solemn task: With hands covered in crisp, white gloves, they slowly lifted the American flag off the casket of their fellow Marine and folded it into a triangle.

Karen Zook cradled the flag as dozens of loved ones whispered condolences at her son's graveside Thursday morning. Cpl. Ian Zook was a true hero, they said after the service. He was the nicest guy you'd ever meet, they said.

As he folded the flag during the service, Cpl. Justin Jett knew his task held deep meaning. Jett had performed it before as part of his regular duties — but he never thought he would be doing it for one of his high school classmates, a friend he had seen as recently as December at another classmate's wedding.

"You hear about this all the time, but you never think it would happen," Jett said. "I know in my mind he was always a good Marine, a Christian and a great guy. He stood by what he believed."

Volunteering to fold the flag was the least he could do to honor one of the smartest guys he ever knew, Jett said.

"I know his parents will have that flag forever," he said.

Hundreds of people — family, friends and military veterans who never knew him — paid their respects to Zook, 24, who grew up in St. Lucie County and died last week as a result of "enemy action" in Iraq's Anbar province.

After a private funeral at Westside Baptist Church in Fort Pierce, Zook was buried at Forest Hills Cemetery in Palm City with full military honors.

An honor guard of Marines fired three shots into the air as about 20 veterans stood behind Zook's family. Marine officials presented Zook's parents with their son's Purple Heart.

More than 70 officers from the Florida Highway Patrol also paid tribute to Ian, the son of Mark Zook, a 19-year state trooper.

Family members said Ian joined the Marines in 2001 as a stepping stone to a career in law enforcement, following in the footsteps of his father, a traffic homicide investigator.

Ian Zook was valedictorian of the Class of 1999 at Faith Baptist School in Fort Pierce. A devout Christian, Zook considered entering the ministry before deciding on the military.

Longtime friends said Zook took the time to stay in touch even as his military career led him to Georgia, California and eventually Iraq.

"I've never been so proud of anyone in my life," said Terry Brent, 22, who had known Zook since he was 6. "He was definitely the greatest friend I've ever had. He kept our friendship up even though miles separated us."

In September, Zook was driving a Humvee that hit an anti-tank mine, blowing off the vehicle's front half. One of his passengers lost a leg, but Zook suffered only minor injuries.

"He was so calm about it," said his friend Kimel Brent, 20. "He was proud to go over there and serve his country. That was a great testament to his character."

Lt. Col. Peter Ahern of the 4th Air/Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, known as ANGLICO, based in West Palm Beach, called Zook "not only a stellar human being but also a stellar Marine."

"He is exactly what we in the Marine Corps would think Americans would expect in a Marine: honorable, brave and loving," Ahern said.

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this month and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Ian T. Zook US Marine Corporal.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

I served with Ian Zook in 1/7 Animal Company 1st platoon. I spoke today at a Memorial Day event and detailed his service, his sacrifice and his amazing family. I miss him and will never forget his beautiful light. I try very hard spending every day working at life and making it good for my family and community in Ians memory, and the memory of all the brave men we have lost.

I served with Zook in 1/7... I was with the Scout Sniper Platoon... He was part of the guys who were recalled (Volunteered) to go to war. We played volley ball in Camp Telega, and drank beer together in REMOB before we were assigned to our platoons. I must apologize for my words here coming so late. I lost my wife in the war to my neighbor, and spent many years trying to forget it. But I have never forgotten your son... Proud to have known him, and proud I still have the chance to honor him. Thank you for your sacrifice... Those words... Are so hard to say. He is still missed. SEMPER FI

I did not know Cpl Ian T Zook, but I do grieve over his passing and wish to let his family and friends know that we honor Ian for his life and the giving therof for the life and freedom of us all and of future generations. I will be praying for all of you as long as I have a breath to do so. I believe that our soldiers are all sons and daughters of all of us Americans. We are so very proud of each of them. Ian, Thank you for all you did while you were among us. I will look forward to getting to know you when my time comes to step into God's prepared place in heaven. Until then, rest in peace, son.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Ian, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Mark & Karen,

Three years have passed since Ian passed away but his spirit is still with me everyday. I had the awesome privelage of recently meeting some of Ian's Marines at the Al Asad chow hall and their thoughts and memories of Ian were the same inspiring memories that I have of him. Ian was truly a great person and his friendship is greatly missed. His and your sacrifice is appreciated everyday and my thoughts are with you.

Dear Mark and Karen, this is now the time for me to share my heart about Ian's life and death. 6 yrs have passed now since 9/11's attack sparked the beginning of so much change in the lives of so many people...some for good and some for bad...as if anything good can come from such a tragedy...but in the the lives of the Zook family, this is one sadness that has a touched me deeply...Ian I loved you then...and I Love You Now!...and I love your family and all that it has become, because all things become what they are by the Grace and the Hand of the Almighty Wonderful God that we serve...and You served Him well...i can only hope, we who are left behind can do so as you have...i still think of you...i always will...my wonderful Ian...i am so proud of You!

Thank you for raising a wonderful boy into the man he became. I was priviledged to have been one of his leaders when he was on the 1998 Teen Missions team to Norway. There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend (KIA on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

At a recent 911 event in Cathedral City, Ca. The city set up what they called the Healing Field. There were 2000 flag set up. Each flag represented a person who had been killed in the war. My family name is Zook. I asked the facilitator of the event if there was a flag that represented a person with the last name of Zook. He said yes. I was able to purchase that flag and it include a tag with brief information about this young man.

Mr. & Mrs. Zook,
My name is Stephanie, and I recenley married a United States Marine. I am only 19, and I knew falling in lvoe with him, ment giving him away to the corps. Reading all of these comments left by such caring strangers brings me to tears. I am so deathly terrified for what could happen to my Husband. I am terribley sorry to hear of your loss. But I think we all know that your son went out fighting like a Devil Dog. He did what he was trained to do, so that others could carry on. These storied motivate me to be a stronger woman, but u cannot fear, fear itself. I married into this. Your son chose to become a Marine, all you can do is smile, to know that you HAVE one of The Few, The Proude, The Marines. Stay strong and always smile, for laughter is Ian's grace from god. God bless you and your family, and thank you...Thank You.

To the family of Ian-

It has been almost a year and a half now since I received the news that Ian had passed. I first met your son at Security Force School in Virginia. I knew he was different from the start, compared to the other young Marines he checked in with. He wasn't afraid to let it be known that he followed god, and in that I had trust in him that he would not be a risk or problem as many new Marines are checking into one of their first duty stations.

I was really pleased to know that on our graduation day from the school, he would be accompanying me to Kings Bay, Ga. Although we were then in different platoons, I saw him regularly. He always had a smile on his face and was an all around good kid.

The last time I saw him he was happily checking out of the unit, looking forward to going to his next duty station.

I think about him, and the other two Marines that were killed in action, stationed with me at Kings Bay everyday. I will never forget what a great guy he was, and I am looking very forward to seeing him again!

Thanks Ian for your sacrifice. You will never be forgotten!

We lost our nephew, Kevin Prince, in a car bomb blast in Iraq on April 23, 2005. We prayed every day for Kevin and all our troops that all would return home safely.

For some, it was not to be. This Memorial Day took on a whole new meaning for our family and made us appreciate even more the great sacrifices of our troops and their loved ones who miss them so much.

We are so fortunate to live in a free country and we are blessed to have young people still willing to defend the freedoms of the world. Be proud of your son, the hero.

We have known the Zook’s from our days at Sunshine Ministries in East Peoria, IL where we went to church together. I was in college at Bradley U. when Deb and I met the Zook’s and were discipled by them in the home fellowship group they hosted.

I didn’t know Ian and Amy as well as most of the people on this list. But, I remember the little boy that loved trains. Both Amy and Ian were quiet and respectful children, and I remember the relationship they had with their parents. I can’t remember a time when Mark and Karen had to raise their voices. They were model kids, as Mark and Karen were model parents.

Although time and distance have separated us, our love for the Zook family has never faded. Ian is described as a loving, caring, given and brave young man with many examples shared. He came by those traits honestly, learning them from Mark and Karen as he grew up. The strength that this young man displayed was that which he learned from his parents. I personally owe much to Mark and Karen for the gentle guidance and direction, as well as friendship, they gave to a new Christian all those years ago. I have always looked up to them both as my spiritual parents in Christ.

With love and great sorrow for their loss,

Friends, and a brother and sister in Christ,

Dear Zook Family,

I am writing from Camp LeJeune North Carolina getting ready to graduate from MOS school when I stumbled across this page and wanted to say that even though I hadn't seen Ian since Thanksgiving 2002, I remember how he was such a positive christian example to me and everyone he was around, and how he was so funny and cool. I remember thinking that maybe one day I could be something like him. As a Christian and a fellow Marine I felt as though I have lost a brother. The world and the Corps is a lesser place without him. I just hope that when I go to Iraq I have the same moral and physical courage as he showed. Something that the Bible and the Marine Corps preaches all the time. You are in my prayers Zook family, just know that Ian is standing next to the Father in Heaven and is looking down on all of us. God Bless and Semper Fi.

It seems like not too long ago I was standing in front of Brazil Left watching Ian ride around the campus of Word of Life talk to friends walking "the circle". He was a great friend. I am proud to say I knew him. My heart goes out to his many friends and family members in the States. May God give each of you the grace to face each new day.

I am a sergeant with the Baton Rouge PD and learned of Ian's death through my son, who was with him at the time of the attack. From what my son has told me about Ian, you can be extremely proud of the Marine he was, and the person he was. Ian's contribution and sacrifice to his country and his fellow Marines will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolence to the Zook family and friends. May God bless you and wrap you in His comforting arms.

To the family and friends of Cpl. Ian Zook, Death is something that makes us realize the immenent need to live life with eternal values. Ian accomplished much on this earth and now has earned the ultimate prize. His sacrifice, his service; such an example and reminder of what Christ Jesus has done for all those who choose to trust in Him. I am proud to live in the country in which freedom reigns and know that Ian gave His everything for this cause and is now experiencing ultimate freedom and has won the victory of all of eternity! I am a friend and fellow student of Ian's from Word of Life and very proud to have known Ian T. Zook.

With sincere condolences and Christian love, Bryce

It was a privelege to spend the year of 1999 through 2000 with him. He is an example of great commitment and sacrifice for the sake of our country and for the freedom of the world. To the Zook Family,

I just wanted to let you know that Ian was such a blessing and encouragement in my life. I went to Word of Life with him and we spent many fun days together. He never failed to make me laugh. He was an amazing man and I am so thankful for the year that God gave me with him. You raised an incredible and beautiful man of God. God knew what he was doing when he blessed us with Ian here on earth. I will remember him always.

With the deepest affection,

Dear Karen and Mark, I've been trying to get in touch with you guys, I think I might have an old number. Thank you so much for calling. I wish i could talk to you myself. I wish I could have supported you guys at the funeral. I have many, many fond memories of Ian. We were best friends. Ian, me, Nick and Lindy. He was the sweetest, nicest, caring, loving, most romantic, christian man I have ever met. I find great priveagle in being his girlfriend and getting close to him and his family. He was my first kiss, first love. I will hold all the special times we had together in my heart. I am trying to pass the word around to all our fellow classmates at Word of Life but find difficulty holding myself together to tell them the sad news. Nothing makes me happier then to know that one day we will see him again in heaven. Please call me again. I love you guys, will be praying for you. Love and prayers,

I wanted to give the Zook family my deepest sympathy. Your son, brother, cousin, friend went out there in an unselfish manner to defend us, because of him and the many others I can say I'm free. He has given me the right to go to school without having to be afraid. My brother is a soldier in the U.S Army and I dont know what I would do if I lost him. I know that there isnt any words that can calm the pain but I do wish you all the best and God Bless You and all your family.
