To David Caruso´s parents and family,
I cannot imagine the grief you experience especially on this day of remembrance. I have been by your son´s Thunderbird campground memorial trailhead two times now. It has become a tradition on Memorial Day now to visit his site and one that I will continue to do so for as long as I am in this area. To read about his relentless ambition to push himself as an honor student and athlete at Waubonsie Valley HS, earning the highest honor of the three palms as an Eagle Scout and passing the Army Ranger school before he was tragically killed; his example and legacy inspires hope and courage and a fierce pride in this country for as he stated "We live in a great country and I think everyone should give something back". I hope it was OK to leave flowers and the flag at the trailhead marker. I prayed for all of you on this day of remembrance and in my prayers promised your son I will give something back; his memory, his courage and leadership dignifies this country and the totality of all he became in his achievements, awards, training that he chose to lay it all down in service for our protection and freedom is most humbling and a sacred honor my family and I will spend the rest of our lives trying to give back.
You raised a hero, and we are forever in his debt. God bless you.

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let you and your family and friends know that we have made a small donation to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation to honor and remember David Mitchell Caruso US Marine Sergeant.
We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals across the American youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.
Sincerely,

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know David, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Dear family of Sgt. David M. Caruso,
We want to say thank you. We understand that no words can be adequate for your sorrow. We certainly do not want to intrude upon your privacy. As Americans we want you to know that we deeply appreciate the ultimate sacrifice your loved one has made for all of us. We also would like for you to be aware that with this letter comes our special concern and prayers for you. We are all safer because young men and women who love their country, and know the value of a free nation, are willing to put themselves in harms way, and lay down their lives to keep this nation free and safe for all of us.
Your sacrifice is also very great. We know that we can give little comfort; however, the knowledge that your loved one did not die in vain, but died in the service of our country, gives each of us a noble example of the value of life, and the responsibility of freedom. We hope this will bring pride and comfort to you.
We at Gethsemane Church believe that there is purpose to life. We send this letter with our deepest appreciation for the greatest of sacrifices, you and your loved one have given to this country. We know it is not enough, but please allow us to assure you that your loved one is not forgotten.
Very Sincerely
Frank G. Noyes

To David Caruso, a kid I met back in high school, in Aurora, IL, that big guy I looked up to at school, in the weight room, and the time he spent hanging out with my sister. I wish I could have gotten to know him more. I shadow the comments that were posted earlier, anytime I feel down, tired, alone, burnt out, or discouraged Dave is the first person that appears in my mind, and gives me the motivation to continue my service here in Honduras with the U.S. Peace Corps...Your are a rock man, and a star up in the sky, that keeps watch on all of us, waiting for us to join you...Your parents gave so much to the US and all of us, to give your life to protect all of us! There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

This entry is for the family of David. First, allow me to offer my deepest condolences for your loss. I am a Marine, and that makes David my brother. I share that brotherhood with thousands of Marines around the globe. But the news of David's heroism touched me because not only do we share an ideal, but also a name. He did not die in vain. And for his sacrifice, we work harder to insure that what he envisioned for the future of freedom in the world will be seen. That's what Marines do. God Bless our family, and God Bless the USA.

I was fortunate enough to watch Dave grow as Recon Marine and a man. I will remember him for his un-waverable faith and his tenaciousness. He was never content with the current, always improving, looking for the edge to give his team or platoon the advantage. Always asking questions about the job. Fearless. Everything he did, he did it until he got it right (and usually better than everyone else). Looked for solutions not excused and complaints. The 1 percent of 1 percent. Dave, I miss you Brother.

To Gloria and Joe,Although we have only known the two of you for a few years, you have always been an example for us to admire. Whenever you talked of David both of you were so proud of his committment to our great nation that you made all of us take a step back and think of him and how lucky we all were that we had such fine young men taking care of us without regard to their own personal sacrifices. I only met David a few times when he visited our plant in Bedford Park and he certainly left an impression with all of us with his committment to his family as well as to our nation. He certainly will be remembered by anyone who came in contact with him over his too short life as a true American Marine.Your entire family will be in our prayers always.
