Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Christopher, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I had the pleasure of knowing Chris while he was stationed in Moundsville, WV on the I&I staff. I was on recruiting duty in Wheeling and Chris helped me out so many times. The word "No" was not in his vocabulary when it came to his fellow Marines. On weekends, he opened the armory for us so that our new recruits could use the indoor simulated marksmanship trainer and would always give our recruits "big brotherly" advice to aid in our recruiting efforts. On the weekends of the toughman contest, he always helped me out with the color guard and helped us "escort" the ring girls. Ha! He started a Marine softball team (The Leathernecks) in the local Moundsville league and invited us recruiters to play on the team. He took us 4-wheeling, drank many of beers with us at Finnegans, and slow-danced with my wife, Lindsay, until her feet hurt! Chris was just an all around good guy and a great friend. When recruiting duty got me down, I called Chris to meet me at Finnegans and in no time flat, I would be laughing and forget all about my day. He always had a way to make you laugh so hard. I wish you were still here with us. Lindsay and I miss you so much, buddy! You will always be in our hearts and one day we will be sitting at the bar again putting back the Chubby Leprechauns.

HEF!
Here we are, another year goes by, 3 to be exact. Aunt Carrie misses your laugh and smile, your words of advice and long conversations about nothing. I can't drink the chubby leprachaun for you tonite...one the Christmas parade is takin up all of Wheeling so I can get to Finn's, secondly, with a little one on the way, can't drink like how we used to. So I shall toast you here at home, with my sparkling water...you are so missed, but, the tears are replaced with memories of alllllll the great times, and not so great times. You always told me to be strong, and to quit playing that sappy ole sad country music on the jukebox, to drink and be merry. So for you Hef, I am strong. Because of you, I am stronger. There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Dear Heflin Family,
Though I did not know your brave young hero, I wanted to tell you that I am sorry for your loss and that he will be missed. As an Army wife myself, I have been lucky that my loved one has returned to me unharmed so far. To lose someone, I cannot imagine the hurt and the depth of that pain. I wish that I could take that pain away from you, bring him back to you, make you whole again... Naturally, I cannot. But I can tell you that your sweet hero touched my heart. He gave his life, the greatest gift, for us, and I want to thank you for that. He is a true hero. A strong and brave young man~ and I am grateful for his life though he was not known to me personally, the world was a brighter place because he was in it. I thank you for that... I have no words to bring you comfort or to dry your tears, even as I type this, tear fall from my eyes as I think of his life gone. He did not die in vain! He will be remembered. He is a true hero. What greater gift can one give than one's life to those he does not even know, this is what he did. I am thankful for it and for him. Thank you for having such a wonderful child. Thank you for being such a wonderful teacher. Thank you for him. He gave all and for that, I will know him. I will remember him. He will not be just a number to me, but a sweet young face, this hero. Thank you, sad family, for your sacrafice, for his...And I am so sorry for your loss. There are no words, I wish there were. Bless your heart, bless his. I am sure he is the Angel on your shoulder now. My heart goes out to you. Thank you.

HEF- I can't believe it has been a year already. Aunt Carrie misses you so much, your laugh, your smile. I really missed you at my wedding. Hammer was in his dress blues and I thought of you. You were such a great person and everyone loved you, especially at Finnigan's. I'll never forget the gang, and the whole Marine feeling when you walked in the bar. All the good times we shared, bad times we've helped each other through. It's not the same without you. It's hard to walk into that bar knowing my hug isn't greeting me at the door. You were a great friend, a great air guitar player, and a true marine. Til we meet again...OooRah! Christopher Heflin, on this November 16th, I shall drink the chubby leprachaun for you!
