James Sherrill Obituary

Kentucky Guard member dies in Iraq

MEADE MAN KILLED IN CONVOY ATTACK
ASSOCIATED PRESS

FRANKFORT - Another member of the Kentucky National Guard has died in Iraq, the third Kentucky guardsman to be killed within a month and the second within a week.

James Alexander Sherrill, 27, from Ekron in Meade County, died Sunday after his convoy was attacked in Iraq, the soldier's family members said.

Sherrill's father, William "Buddy" Sherrill, told WAVE-TV of Louisville he hadn't yet comprehended the news.

"I still don't believe it," Will-iam Sherrill told the television station. "I'm still waiting on them to call me and tell me it was a mistake."

James Sherrill joined the Kentucky Guard, where he drove trucks, after serving four years as a Marine, his younger brother, B.J. Sherrill, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. Before being deployed to Iraq, James Sherrill was a student at Elizabethtown Community College, his brother said. He did not know his exact field of study.

"He loved to help people in any way he could," B.J. Sherrill said, noting that his brother was also an avid weightlifter.

James Sherrill was engaged and his fiancee was expecting the couple's child, B.J. Sherrill said.

"He has a baby on the way, and he was on the verge of getting married," B.J. Sherrill said.

Additional details surrounding the death were not clear. Kentucky National Guard officials declined to comment, citing a policy of not releasing information on casualties until 24 hours after family members are notified.

Sherrill is one of 19 soldiers, five from the National Guard, with homes of record in Kentucky who have been killed in Iraq. More than 60 soldiers from Fort Campbell have died in the war.

As of yesterday, at least 1,536 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

Spc. Eric L. Toth, a member of the Kentucky National Guard, was killed last week along a supply route in Iraq when the armored Humvee he was riding in was attacked by a car bomb. Two other Guard members, including Toth's brother-in-law, were hurt in the attack.

Three other Kentucky National Guard members have been killed in the Iraq war: Sgt. Jonathan A. Hughes of Lebanon, who died March 19; Sgt. Darrin K. Potter of Louis-ville; and 1st Lt. Robert Henderson, of Alvaton. Potter died in 2003, and Henderson in 2004.

As of last week, there were 1,159 Kentucky Guard soldiers in Iraq. That was the state's largest contingent there since the war began more than two years ago.

Cpl Sherill was my senion NCO in Okinawa in the USMC. An amazing man which sat in my barracks room listening to pink Floyd and talking about racism and traveled threw the real meaning of life. As a white kid from pa I don't think to this day I have been able to talk to like we talked. It was a rough time in my life in 2000 and if it wasn't for a awesome human being helping me threw I'm not sure I would have made it. He was my best friend and a life lesson that means so much more to me now then I would have ever imagined. I just learned of his passing and would like to talk to his family. Rip Big Swo! See you on the other side man. To family please call me at 570-367-8217

This is the very first time that I seen this page honoring James-This is awsome!
I worked with James for 2 or 3 years at gsi and we was really good friends inside and outside of work. (when i worked there several of us called him country)
I will never for get that laugh of his-and how it almost got me in trouble at work many times, id do something goofy and James would bust out laughing. James was a wounderful person, he adord his grandmother and lived his life for Jesus Christ. The last time that I spoke to James was after I had almost lost my life myself due to a domestic voilance situation in April of 2004-James knew the person who hurt me and he told me several times that he had a bad feeling about him and i should get away...James was right...James was a "thinker" he always thought long and hard about things and he was right about alot of things he "had feelings" about.
James also told me in April of 04 that he had met Stephanie and he was in love-
When I seen the news and found out he was gone and he had a baby on the way I just thought to my self...James will still take care of his baby and Stephanie- he is now their gaurding angel. I know he would have been a wounderful dad-James had a huge heart and I dont know of anyone who james disliked-he was so easy to get along with and to make friends with.
I know without a doubt he is in heaven-James was a true hero and angel on earth just as he is now in heaven.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know James, but he is my hero. If you would like a copy of the angel I posted here, please contact me and I will email that back to you.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

James,
With great sadness I've learned that death is God's way of keeping all things equal. Through prayer, our family has continued to search for a place of peace. There hasn't been a day that has passed that I don't think of you. I miss my cousin. I have always thought of you and BJ as "My brothers from another mother." Although life has it's ups and downs one thing will remain unchanged and that's the love I have for you. Thanks for giving our family such rich memories of love and laughter. I pray that your sacrifice will continue to change the lives of many. Because it has changed my life.

Love Always,

Dear Sherrill family,
Though I did not know your wonderful fallen hero and I do not know you, I happened upon this page and read his bio, tears filled my eyes. I wanted to tell you thank you. Thank you for his service, thank you for raising such a wonderful young man, thank you for helping him be the great man he had to be~ he gave everything~ sacraficed all~ and I am grateful. He is not just a number to me. His great smile shines back from this screen and I am reminded where I read that his beloved was pregnant when he died, that he had a child that will only know this smile like I do, from pictures, and I am so sorry for this. As an Army wife, I know how hard it is to send your loved one in the path of harm's way, but I have been lucky, my husband has returned to me alive. I cannot imagine how much it hurts for you. I wish I could make you whole again, I can't, but I can tell you that the world is a better place because your loved one was here. The world misses him. I am thankful for him, grateful, and I will remember him though I never knew him. I will remember his bright smile and keep in my heart that his child never had the chance to touch his face, that he was never able to smile on his child though I have no doubts he is standing over his child's shoulder like an Angel now. He is a hero. Thank you...From one military family to another, thank you for the ultimate gift, this brave soldier, this strong hero...

I did not personally know James but I have known many like him. Some close personal friends. I retired from the Army in August of 04. I have served in 3 tours of combat duty. In each case I knew in my heart if I were not to make it home I would die knowing I was doing what is right. I am sure James to felt he was doing the right thing. I visited the funeral home out of respect for a fallen soldier but spoke to no one. Your family is in my prayers. Always remember that James may be gone but he will never be forgotten. We wanted to write and let you know how very much your family is on our hearts right now. Our children went to school with James and BJ, it seems like an eternity now. James graduated with our son. I saw my son this weekend and held him a little closer than usual and prayed that God keep him safe. He is not military, but our son-in-law is and getting ready to make his 2nd tour to Iraq.

To Stefanie, I'll say...I've been there, it's not easy raising your child without its father, but you will forever remind this child of the great things he has done and the wonderful person he was.

To Mr. & Mrs. Sherrill, I pray that God will comfort you and ease your pain.

To Arnold and Nakena, we've been saying special prayers for you as well, as we know your loss goes deep.

It saddened me greatly to hear of James passing. We were very close in high school and used to hang out quite a bit. I remember fondly going to football practices during the summers and going to all the games and dances. I never imagined I'd know anyone injured or killed in this crisis, so this one hits very close to home. But I think the saddest part is finding out that he was based in Paducah being that I live not even 30 minutes away. I would've loved to have been able to visit with him more and found out how things have been since graduation. Know that you're all in my prayers and thoughts and that James is smiling down on us all because he knows he was truly loved. Keep your heads up and Gods glory will shine down on us all.

I can still remember homeroom in high school, you always knew when James was getting ready to walk through the door. He was always cracking jokes about something. You could be in the worst mood, and one look at him and that was all it would take. I haven't seen James in years, but it still breaks my heart to know that such a wonderful man lost his life fighting for his country. James, you are a hero in every sense of the word. You are with God now. May he take care of your family. To your unborn child, may he/she know what a wonderful man their father was.

With deepest sympathy

James had a heart so big and full of love it was unmeasurable. The best friend anyone could ask for. A shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen, or a great big hug at just the right time.I am sure everyone would say it is no surprise James gave his life for his country. I am truly honored to say I had the chance to know such an exceptional man. You are a TRUE hero in every sense of the word. I keep your family in my thoughts and prayers.

I just wanted to express my deepest condolences for the family. Its still hard to believe James is gone. But, he will forever be in our hearts, and his legacy will go on with us always. He was a good man. Though we feel so much sorrow, my prayer is that God gives you the strength to carry on, and that you feel comforted by God and know that James died a hero. Now, he is looking down on us from heaven. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Love,

I did not know James, but I wanted you to know that he and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. James' death really hits home for me as my uncle was killed in Vietnam. May God be your strength during this extremely difficult time. James' ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten.

James,

Man it seems like yesterday that we both were in Camp Pendleton, California and chillin together. I have the deepest memories of us going out together and relaxing, talking about back home in Kentucky. In my eyes you are not gone, I can't go into this leaning into my own understanding; but into the understanding of Gods will. I celebrate that you are with peace at this time. But I ask that you mourn for me while I experience lifes challenges and troubles.

Love you James.

My prayers go out to the family. I know they are going having a tuff time right now. When Bea, James mom, found out he was going to Iraq she cried almost everyday. I have friends in Iraq and I never thought anything like this would happen to one of them. For me it changes the way I look at things. When I watch the news and hear about another one of our soldiers is gone it makes me sad but when it is someone you know it changes everything. Not only have we lost a friend, son, grandson, fiancee, a little baby girl that is not in this world yet has lost a father. I know Bea, Buddy, BJ, Stephanie, and the family will make sure that little girl knows who her father is and how much of a great guy he is. James we thank you for all of the memories you gave us and for fighting for our country. You may be gone but you WILL NEVER be forgotten!

Man I was thinkin back on all the times that we had after school cruzin town and football, gettin everyone together for a few games in my side yard!!!! Crazy to hear that you were KIA. It seems like it was just the other day that you stopped by my place and said that you was out of the military!!! I couldn’t believe it when I was watching the news and they said that a Ky Guardsman from Brandenburg was killed over the weekend and then they showed your Pic....... I was lost for words. Its still hard to think that we was at GSI working together and you talkin about that you was in school and was tryin to be a detective!! Well man all I can say now is we are friends forever so when I get up there save some games of football for me so we can team up like old times and show them how the Big Green can throw down!!!! RIP James A. Sherrill
