To the family of Sgt. Mark A. Maida:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.
The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).
As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.
Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.
If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Maida Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

To the family of Sgt. Maida,
Please know that just as your loved one will remain in your hearts and minds, his sacrifice and that of your family, will remain with the people he died defending. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for his bravery and selflessness, or the heartache we feel for your loss. God grant you the peace that passes all understanding.
In Memory of Mark ~ (Debra Estep)

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Mark, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

To the family of Mark:
I was present for his funeral in Madison. I was among the eight-man detail that rendered military honors to Sergeant Maida. When I first heard the story surrounding our mission to Madison, I was deeply touched. At the time, Mark was only a couple of years older than I and his story reminded me just how unforgiving the military life is. But at the same time, I am reminded of great courage and heroics. Mark Maida was committed to his duty to the country and I, as a Soldier, sincerely thank him for his contributions to our team, the United States Army. God bless Mark Maida and God bless his family.

To the family and friends
I have only just begun this journey and may not have known your loved one personally.
I extend to you my deepest condolences. No words will ever express the grief those close to this lost treasure are feeling. I can only say that I can share this grief as I too lost a loved one July 8, 2006. I will continue to pray for the safety of our soldiers and especially the family and friends of our lost hero’s. I only hope the memories will carry us through. I will continue pray that you also will believe and know that our heavenly father will not give us more than we can handle.
As always I read (and cry) through the memorials of our lost hero’s, So many people have already expressed the things I would also say. I am amazed and take comfort that so many people care. I can only thank you for the sacrifice you and especially Mark have made to protect our country. As others have said “I am only an email away.” I would be honored if you so choose to share about this fine hero.
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

To SGT Mark Maida's Family and Friends,
I had the distinct pleasure and privelege of serving with Mark for several years. He was great soldier and even greater friend. He always wore a smile whenever I saw him and would never let anything get him down. There is many a time that I found strength and resolve from his upbeat and outstanding attitude, and he is someone that had a profound effect on everyone around him. The loss of Mark as a friend and soldier is with me everyday and I can only offer my deepest condolences to you and yours. God bless and keep you all.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!
My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

Ray, Diane, and Family..I cannot express the sorrow I feel for you and your family. No one can truly understand the sadness and emptiness one feels. Our family lost a soldier exactly one month after Mark. He too, was killed by an IED while driving a Humvee. Just know that I am there for you all and thinking of you!

My husband I wish to send our deepest condolences to the Maida family. Mark and my husband worked together and were close friends. In fact, my husband referred to Mark as his “closest friend” here at Fort Irwin. We hosted Mark and Shawn at our home many times and relished in the laughter and good times. At times, our children were attached at the hip to Mark, something he never complained about but rather enjoyed. His friendship meant a great deal to my husband and I was always happy to see him coming up the walkway to our door. He was an absolute joy to be around, a loyal friend, and an absolutely remarkable human being. We will never forget his amazing smile, humor, or character. Simply stated, we feel blessed to have encountered such a wonderful person in this life…we will never forget Mark. We pray for peace for all of Mark’s friends and family in these difficult days that lie ahead. Mark was an exceptional man, we thank the Lord for having known him and we thank Mark for his ultimate sacrifice. God Bless you all.

To the Maida family,
First know this leaves me with great sadness to have to write this about your son,Mark.I had the opportunity to spend a week with your son in San Diego last May. He and my sister(Lindsey) were very good friends. When I think back to that week I spent with Mark, I now know what an incredible person Mark was. From the first second he arrived it was nothing but laughter. When he got out of his truck with a full suitcase to spend "a few days" with us, my sister was not sure what to think. But if the situation was reversed we hoped anyone would do the same for our loved one. That week in San Diego your son Mark became a member of our family. It was a week i know we will never forget. How can we, Mark was there to make us all have a great time. I only spent a week with your son and, now I really understand what a great job you & your family did raising Mark. He was that special kind of person you get lucky enough to spend any amount of time with. It was only a week for me but Mark surely made his foot print in my life. I am grateful to have been able to spend time with him. I know Mark would like us to laugh not cry, but how is that possible when Mark is not here to do that? So when you feel lower than low think of the joy Mark gave you all for 22yrs. Try to smile if not for yourself how about for Mark? I know my words cannot heal your pain, but Mark has been and will be in my prayers. Keep in mind this is the effect you son, Mark had on me in only 7 days time.Know your son touched everybody he meet, and will never be forgotten by myself or my family. You are in my prayers God bless you all.We miss you Mark.

I am very sorry for your families loss. My little brother CPL Kevin William Prince was just killed in Iraq April 23 at the age of 22. He was also in Echo Troop with Mark. It has been really tuff for our family. We have had nothing but support from our friends and people that knew Kevin and people who didn't. We know that Kevin is in a better place now and God is taking care of your son and my brother. They will be watching over us till the day our time comes and we get to be with them again. I am really sorry for the loss of your son and if there is anything my family or I can do for you please e-mail me at [email protected]
God Bless,

To the Maida Family:
My deepest and heartfelt condolences on the loss of your son Mark. My son Daniel is in 2nd PLT, E TRP. I hear the change in his voice each time he's made the call to me about a fellow soldier. It is hard for some to fully grasp how fragile our freedoms are and the sacrifice that is required. Those of us who have family and friends in the Armed Forces understand too well. Mark made the ultimate sacrifice, and my heart breaks at the cost. You and all of Mark's family and friends are in my thoughts and my prayers. God bless you.

Dear Maida family,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss and want to extend my deepest sympathies. My brother, Cpl. Kevin Prince, was also in Echo Troop and died April 23. It pains me deeply to hear of more deaths from the 2/11, almost as much as finding out that we lost him. I wish your family the strength to get through this time, and know that you are also in our family's prayers.

Maida Family,
I know that no words can erase your pain. I do know that Sgt Maida will be missed by many. I had the honor to serve as Sgt Maida's Squad Leader prior to the deployment. He was an exceptional soldier. He was hardworking, disciplined and loyal to everyone around him. He always had a smile and made my day seem better. No matter how rough things got, Sgt Maida never got upset. I apologize for not being there on his final patrol. I feel that I should have been with him. My heartfelt sympathies go out to you all.

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for the tremendous sacrifice you have made for our country and the cause of freedom. This Memorial Day, we join with you in celebrating the life of Sgt. Maida, and join in the prayers of many who ask God to grant you His grace and peace as you grieve your great loss. Our brave men and women in uniform may not consider themselves heroes, but they are. They are the best of the best, and their courage gives us hope that America can once again be as noble and great as her past. May we be inspired by their bravery and willingness to serve in such a way as to make a real difference in the world around us. May we always remember… and never forget. God bless you!

Dear Maida Family:
This Memorial Day, I reflect upon the fallen heroes, like Mark, who gave their all for me. I am humbled and eternally greatful. I am sure that millions in our country and abroad who have enjoyed the sweet taste of freedom - some for the very first time - also join me in this time of reflection and deepest, heart-felt thankfulness.
Please know that I lift up your family in prayer before our Heavenly Father - that His peace and comfort will be upon you. God bless you, keep you, and make His face to shine upon you.
