I roomed with Steven for three weeks at OSU's Aerospace Academy in June of 1991. GREAT GREAT GREAT GUY! We had an absolute blast for those three weeks! I can't even begin to explain the adventures we encountered in that short time. I didn't stay in contact with anyone afterwards, and just started looking people up about a month ago. Was shocked and saddened by the news of Steven even at 15 years after his passing. Though, as I read his bio I swelled with pride. Memories came flooding back of a young man who was absolutely taken by flying and space. I remember him asking questions about EVERYTHING during the camp. Dedicated. He was clearly the best of us. I was extremely proud to read that he pursued his dreams, and was successful in both family and career. I never had any doubts that he would. Although it is very late, my condolences to Steven's wife, child, parents and all of his family. I will make absolutely sure that my wife and kids know who he was and what he meant to me.
I dug out an old photo album from the camp. Found it interesting that I have almost no pictures of anyone from the camp. Steven and I spent our time taking pictures of the aircraft we encountered, and not the people we were with. Fortunately, I did find one picture of Steven that I'll post. Thank you so much for sharing him with us. I'll never forget the sacrifices Steven Shephard made for us all or for the short time that I knew him. He made an impact on my life.

I will remember you more than just 1 day a year Stephen. You always had a smile or a joke to cheer someone up. You will always be missed my dear friend. Along with your beautiful wife and parents and family your friends will be sure that your beautiful wonderful daughter knows who you were and what you stood for. I pray that your family moves forward with only the memories of joy that you brought to their life and the lives of others. I also ask that if they ever need my help and I can help they call upon me. Blessings always, Sondra Criswell- Ramos

The flag is flying in the sky
A daily reminder of who and why
We sit here remembering them today
These heroes that now lie in their grave.
While here on earth, the bravest ones
A soldier, a mother, a daughter, a son
The father's who went far off to war
To ensure our safety and so much more
To keep our children happy and free,
Someone must do this job, you see
So, today remember the soldiers who served,
Because this is one thing they truly deserve.
The loved one's that they have left behind,
The Gold Star mothers, like your and mine
We honor them proudly, every day
Our American Soldier...Proud and Brave
By Shannon Williams-Austill
I want to thank this soldier for their sacrifice.
And, I wish to extend my deepest regards to the loved ones they have left behind. Their service to our nation, has not gone unnoticed. They are our heroes, who paid the ultimate price for us, and that is something that every American needs to be reminded of and remember everyday.
The freedom we all have, we have because of brave young men and women who made a choice to defend and serve.
Today, let me remember your loved one with you.

Son, everyday I see your beautiful daughter makes me realize how much we both missed. But she is such a joy and has so much of your personality. She is happy, healthy and you would be so very proud of her. Some day I will see you again, and we will talk of her. Right now, I know you want me to be there for her, and I promise I will. Merry Christmas!!!

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Steven, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Dear Shephard Family,
My heart goes out to you and your fallen Hero. Though I did not know your young man, he touched my heart. As an active duty Army wife, I know how hard it is to watch your loved one leave downrange. Those sleepless nights spent waiting for his phone calls, emails, letters…watching the news, hoping that each unnamed Troop is not your beloved. Waiting is almost unbearable. Each time you hear his voice on that line, your hold your breath, wishing you could shut time down just for a couple more seconds of his voice, even if he doesn’t speak about anything earth shattering or spectacular. I know how it feels. I have been lucky though, my husband came home to me. The loss of your husband, your son, your father…It breaks my heart to think of all this Hero gave up to serve his country, his brothers and sisters, and for all of us. His sweet child will never know him except by pictures and other people’s memories. His dear wife will have her hands full being mother and father to his dear child, she will never again touch his face, have him hold her close when she has a bad day. His entire family will be feel the sting of his loss, not only on holidays, but everyday. In those terrible moments, you will question ‘why?’ and there will be no real reply to your mournful calls.
I can’t take away your pain, I wish that I could, I wish I could bring back every Hero that has fallen~ I can only tell you that he was a real Hero. Not only to you, but to all of us. His sacrifice, his life, is a sign of his honorable and courageous soul. He was a strong man who stood up for his beliefs~ I know this because he joined the military, because he wanted to make a difference and he did. The world is a better place because he was the kind of man to be proud of, the kind that embraced life. Though his body is no longer with us, I am sure that he stays close to you, your guardian Angel. I want you to know that I am proud of him. I see all that was given by this young Troop. He gave his future; he gave his time with his wife, his child, his family…No greater thing could anyone give than he. I am grateful for his life. His love of flying. That he was a strong leader and a brave man, facing fears that make most people want to run and hide. He didn’t. He stood his ground, taking action. He did not buckle under pressure or fear; instead~ he was better for it.
I can tell you that he made a difference. Not only to you, your friends, but to his soldiers, to this public who is grateful and thankful that he was the brave soul he is. He served his country, this humble servant, and he gave his biggest gift. I don’t know if this will soften your grief, make losing him easier, that he will be remembered, that he is someone to admire and awe. A good man will be remembered by his friends and his family, a great Hero will touch lives of those he did not even know. Steven did this. He was someone to look up to, that dream that all little boys wish that their father was like…The kind of man we want our boys to grow to be like.
I wanted to tell you that I am sure that this sweet, funny Hero is the angel on your shoulder, that even though you cannot see him~ he is always by your side. I wanted to tell you thank you. Thank you for his life. It was a great one, one filled with love and hope. I know this because the men and women over there~ I know that soldiers can’t be great ones without the love and happiness you gave to him. He was loved, your love kept him strong so that he could face that fear everyday he was there. You were his lifeline, his reason to give his all. I am grateful for his life. I am so glad he was the man he was, and although his life was not a long one, his life was strong and worthwhile. He is a true hero. One that I will remember, this funny father who did not have the chance to look into his baby’s face…His story touched my heart . I will remember him. I will. Always. Thank you so so much for your gift. I am humbled. Thank you for him.

I went to flight school with Steve Shephard and really grew to admire his dedication to his country and his love of flying. He was one of the top warrant officers in our class and I frequently went to him for help. He was always more than willing to help out a fellow classmate. Steve was a Platoon Leader's dream.
One morning, while I was having breakfast at the Dining Facility at Bagram Airbase, Afghanistan, I saw Steve's picture flash up on the television. I had heard about a crash, but never thought the pilots were people I actually knew. It really hit me hard. I was truly saddened by his loss.
Steven Shephard is the definition of a true American and his loss was not in vain. I can only hope that I can make just 10% of the impact on this world that he did.
My deepest condolences to his family.
Respectfully,

Steve and I became fast friends while we both attended Kansas State University - Salina Aviation Program. He is by far one of the finest human beings I have ever had the honor to know. He was a very down-to-earth, humble and god fearing man. He was always polite, and good natured...even when times were tough and we were all broke working as flight instructors.
I have three very distinct memories of conversations we had. The first is how we should prevent our flight students from killing us during the takeoff and landing stage of Private Pilot flight training (joking of course)...he had me laughing so hard I couldn't catch my breath. Second, I can still hear him telling me on the phone that he was going into the U.S. Army and was going to fly helicopters...he was so excited. I was excited for him too. And the third, when he was finishing training on the Apache and that he was most likely going to Iraq soon after he got to his first unit. I just knew he would be alright.
He e-mailed me when he found out about Meleah expecting. And he emailed me again from Iraq telling me the grand plan to make home just in time to welcome their new edition. He sounded so excited. What a great father.
Well today, on Christmas Eve, as I flew into Washington D.C. we were given the Mount Vernon Visual Approach to Runway 01 at Washington-Reagan National Airport. On this approach you fly north up the Potomic River toward the airport and on the north side of the airport you can see the entire National Mall with the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and the Capital Building distinctly visible. It made me think of Steve. I am truly sorry for his loss and truly grateful for his service to our country.
Thank you, Steve. I miss you brother.

Barbara, Brandie, and Meleah,
First I want to apologize for taking so long to sign this and sharing a small piece of my memories of Steven. It's been almost a year and I still can't think about him without falling apart. He was more than just a cousin to me, he was my friend, and Brandie...he was my brother too.
I have more special memories of my times spent with Steven than I do of my times spent with anyone else, other than my parents. I always looked forward to seeing Steven and spending time with him. I have so many fond memories and stories to share....oh boy, do I have some stories! It's still so hard. Every time I pick up my fishing poles, or pass by the action figure section at Wal-Mart, a tear always comes to my eyes and I get the lump in my throat. But also, every time I see water bugs playing at the edge of the pond, or I eat a gummi worm, thoughts of Steven bring a smile. (Some of those stories I mentioned)
I think of Steven everyday and he will be forever in my heart and in my soul. I keep his picture on my desk and I often draw strength and courage from the look on his face. I miss him tremendously and I suppose I always will. I couldn't be prouder of the sacrifice he made for this country we both love so much.
I have never asked "Why?” I know why. However, I still feel sad for so many reasons, mostly because of the baby girl he wanted so much and never got to hold. As time grows closer for Krystal to give birth to our baby girl, I think of that more and more. But I also thank God for the blessings that were brought to so many of our lives by knowing Steven, and for Sierra, in whom Steven will live on.
Blue skies and tailwinds forever, cuz!
Your Hillbilly cousin and brother for ever....

I met Steven in the Warrant Officer Basic Course. I unfortunately didn't get to know him too well. I knew him as a quiet professional who was always in a good mood. My condolences to his friends and family.

I knew Steve briefly while attending K-State. I remember we were sitting next to each other during CFI standardization class, and it was announced he had been accepted to Army flight school and would be leaving soon. He had the biggest smile on his face. Many people came and went that I didn't know very well at K-State and don't remember, but I remember Steve. My heart goes out to his family.

To the Shepard Family -
My deepest sympathy and condolances......it has taken me this long to find the words able to contribute to Steve's memory and finding a place to say them.
I attended flight school with Steve and was terribly saddened by the news of his death. I had recently returned from Iraq myself and hated to hear of another brother's passing from the war.
One of the last memories I have of Steve was having dinner with him and Meleah, my wife and our year-old son at their home in Fort Rucker.....we talked, laughed and they just throughly enjoyed being around a child. They lit up around our son and talked about their trials with having a child of their own. From showing my son Steve's toy airplanes to bouncing him on his lap, they treated him as if he was their own - this was a husband and wife that truely deserved a child for themselves. I knew that the moment I met them.
When I heard of Meleah's pregnancy I was estatic for them; then devistated by the news last summer......but again relieved that Steve has not been lost forever - his spirit will live on with his daughter now. A final gift of life unknowingly granted before his death....
Steve was kind, strong and a true gentleman.......I wish more men out there could be like him - including myself. He made you respect and admire him merely with his presence, yet was one of the most friendly and welcoming people I have ever met in my life........
Steve - you will always be alive in our memories of you......as long as we remember, you will never die.
- Keep flying brother.
Your Friend -

It has been almost a year since we lost Steve and I want to say I feel I was so blessed to have known Steve. I met Steve and Meleah at Ft. Rucker and they were always so polite and willing to help you with whatever you needed. It was also great to meet some good ol' okies as I am. A few times they both babysat my son and daughter, I knew they would make great parents! Meleah, you and your family are in my thoughts each day.

I have looked at this guestbook now for the past 8 months and read the wonderful things written by strangers to and about Steve, and they are all truly special. Thank you to all of the people who have taken the time from their lives to honor Steve as he deserves to be remembered. He will always be a hero to me. I am so proud to have called Steve my family. It took me awhile to write anything, because no words truly can express how I have felt since he was called home to heaven. One can only hope that when their time on this earth is done that they will leave a legacy and be remembered as such an honorable human being as Steve. God gave us a gift by letting us know Steve for his time here with us, but He must have needed a pilot and now we have him to watch over our journey here and guide us from above. I love you, Steve and I do greatly miss your smile!! Thank you for giving your life so unselfishly for all of us.

When America asks for heroes to step forward and defend our nation, it is men of the caliber of Steven Shepard that answer the call. We are, and always will be, a great nation because of Steven and men just like him. I thank God that men like him still exist. Heaven became a brighter place the day Steven left his family and arrived there. Amen

The moral fiber, conviction, strength of character and spirit present within Steven Shepherd in life still exists to this day even after his passing and will continue forever as long as their are those among us that strive to achieve the same noble qualities in our own endeavors in our efforts to be more like him. That is the living legacy of CWO Steven Shepherd as well as all those gallant individuals to ever don the military uniform of the United States of America and serve unit, God, country; or those fellow Americans who stand along side in support of their sacrifices. Steven Shepherd is a shining example that lights the way for all of us.

Each fallen soldier adds to the sacrifices made for our freedom. Our gratitude for this action cannot be measured in words, but only in prayer. Therefore I pray that Chief Warrant Officer Steven E. Shephard knows our sorrow and the loss we feel. He is now hanging his hat in a different place and this place requires no more pain or sacrifice on his part. He has found peace and solitude in a much better place than he has ever been. God bless you Steven.

To the family of Steve,
We were honored to meet some of your family and to get to know Steve a little through your stories and photographs. We will always remember Steve's fantastic smile. He was smiling in almost every photograph! Thanks for sharing those with us.
Although we only met a small part of your family, all of you are in our thoughts and prayers, particularly Meleah.
There are so many ways in which lots of lives have been altered by the events of June 27. Although each family member and friend faces the huge loss of Steve and Keith in a personal and unique way, we are not alone. In a profound way, as Brandie has pointed out, we are all connected by the loss of two special and unique people.
No words can adequately express our condolences to you, but please accept our inadequate attempt.
With love,
Hilary and Karl

It has almost been a month since we lost a vital part of our family. It has taken me this long to even attempt to sign this guestbook. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of my cousin and wonder why this happened to such an outstanding person. I know that we are not to question God so I have tried not to. I still just think it is all a bad dream that our family can't wake up out of. Steven was so loved and cherished. At Christmas time this past year we all met at Grannie and Grandad's house as always and Steven brought his uniform and took pictures with all of us. I didn't want him to go...We all were so scared. Steven wasn't scared though. Atleast he didn't show it to us. HE loved with such a passion. He also knew how much he was loved. I still don't want to do this....
We will forever miss him. I just wanted to thank you all for the support and prayers we have received. We need them.
To Brandie, Aunt Barbara, Meleah and baby~ I will always hurt, as we all will but we will somehow get stronger through this because it is exactly what Steven would want us to do. I love you.
